GTA III or True Crime Xbox?

Right now it's a toss up for these two games. GTA III is a dual pack w/Vice City. I have an HDTV as well, and Vice City is supposedly 720p widescreen.

Any early consensus as to which of these games will be better? They seem very similar. I've played GTA III on the PC and liked it.

Wait for 'em to hit rental shelves. Check them both out for a few days and see which one you like the gameplay of better and which one will offer the best replayability.

Agreed. GTA3 and Vice City are tried and true classics already. But True Crime has loads of potential. IGN already has a review up of True Crime, but wait for a few more.

Seems as if True Crime will bring a lot more to the table than GTA did, but whether it will all come together is still yet to be determined.

I played a demo of true crimes from the Xbox Mag. and it was OK but not the same feel as GTA III/Vice City. I've played and beat both GTA's on PS/2 though and they are loads of fun.

true crime is supposed to be very good. Everythign you do in the game has an affect on you and the story unlike GTA where all u had to do was run away etc.

blaze - what issue was the demo in? I have a sub. to that same mag - there's a video showcase in this months and a video demo from a few months ago but afaik there isn't a playable demo yet unless someone stole an issue and I don't know about it

I wasn't that impressed by the True Crimes from the video I saw - not too too excited about it. I'll rent it first to see how it goes. But GTA3 is awesome. I have the original for PC, played VC for PS2. 2 games for the price of one (albeit probably a little repetitive) - you can't beat that.

Oh yea - I believe Outpost.com has the double pack of GTA3 for $39.99, just a heads up

I get the XBox mag too, and there was no True Crime demo on any of the CDs I received.

Right, and Outpost has the pre-order for GTA3 for $39 so I wanted to decide now.

Your best bet would probably be to rent TC first. You know the style and gameplay of GTA3 so that's always a safe bet if you pick that. TC is a rental in my book all the way until I can get quality time in with the game

I just bought it for Gamecube. Man, they really rendered every street in this game. You can take the 10 east to the 405 north, exit on Wilshire boulevard, make a left turn on Westwood, and take it straight to westwood village. However, I'm a little disappointed they didn't render UCLA in the game. Instead, they put a construction zone where UCLA should be. Hmm, but pretty impressive graphics and story so far.

True Crime has too many GTA comparisons...which will ultimately disappoint some. The general consensus that I've heard is while its an awesome game, it isn't the same level of quality as GTA.

Personally I'll be getting the GTA double pack for xbox (and it supports custom soundtracks/radio stations...w00t!) because its better value. I will try True Crime eventually though 🙂

got True Crime earlier... not impressed at all. Some cool stuff in it, but nothing I'd pay $50 for.

On the contrary, I'm having a great time with this game.

It's similar to GTA III but not quite the same. THe combat system is complex and very well done. The story so far is very good and the voice acting is phenomenal.

As with GTA III for PS2, the graphics are "meh" but understandable considering the complexity of the environments.

My gripes? The AI is just plain wacky -- cars will up and ram you, pedestrians will freak out, etc. Also the physics engine for driving is far below that of GTA III. The control just isn't there.

However, this game is VERY fun, and is a lot like a "flip side" version of GTA. It's definitely worth a try.

I'd say its a rental... I don't like the combat system very much as the controls aren't responsive and it feels like I'm playing a horrible version of Mortal Kombat.

But then again, I absolutely hated Vice City on the PS2. It was great on PC, but sh!t on the PS2.

The AI is nuts, I was fighting a pimp in the middle of the street and this car just kept ramming my car which I used to block off the intersection... and then it pushed my car out of the way and ran me and the pimp over. WTF??

This game just doesn't feel very polished to me. I'll be giving it another run before I return it, but man, if you're going to make a console game, at least make it run smoothly (this game has choppy frames and draw distance problems out the ass)
