GTA 4 has the best shooting mechanics I've seen in a game

This includes the call of duty and medal of honor games.

What's cool about GTA 4 is that it's actually kind of hard to hit stuff at range. I've only managed to get a pistol so far.

While COD and MOH games not only are extremely scripted, but with the various scopes and the level design, the enemies are pretty easy to hit.

Or are COD and MOH better on the PC?

seem to remember stalker having fairly realistic guns, in so much as you could not hit anything with a pistol outside of melee range

I have always been under the impression that GTA4 ran like shit on PC. Is it still true or has it been patched up? I've wanted to play it since release but reports of awful performance has kept me away.

It runs great on my rig, but my rig is pretty high spec; i5 @ 4.3 GHz, GTX 680, 16 GB RAM, game running off a Crucial M4 SSD. I'm able to play it with every setting maxed at 60 fps solid.

Yeah, my e8400 and gtx 460 probably won't cut it. At least on high settings. Maybe medium-low then. I should have grabbed this one during the summer sale. Oh well.

CoD is more like a quake type game just in a modern setting. There's absolutely no realism whatsoever in the game other than the fact your a human shooting a graphical replica of a gun made in real life. You might as well be in space shooting aliens with the physics and gun mechanics. If you can accept that then it's actually an entertaining game series. Just don't play it for any realism.

This. Some of the mods make it even better. Forcing you to shoot with iron sights/optics to hit anything not point blank is really immersive. It also helps when the mods make the enemies die with 1-2 shots as opposed to 6.

This. CoD and BF3 give you the aim, recoil control and trigger technique of a Delta Force Operator or better. I guess that's what you're supposed to be playing, but still...

GTA4 Shooting mechanics are pretty terrible. It's something like shooting from the hip or not actually aiming correctly. I guess as a reflection that the game character may just suck at aiming it's okay?

Sniper rifle seems to aim just fine. *shrug* GTA4 shooting is actually pretty good all things considered. I especially love how hard it is to hit anything while driving.

That's a great point as well, the total opposite of GTA4. The shooting mechanics are really solid overall (with some really goofy exceptions for game balance issues I guess), but the skills necessary in real life to even closely approximate that level of marksmanship and competence is absolutely staggering.

Apropos to the Delta reference. This discussion makes me think of the book about Black Hawk Down, where the observed differences between the Delta boys and the regular rangers was incredibly gigantic. The Deltas were taking skinnies down at very long distance with well placed shots on a constant basis, most of the Rangers were having a much harder go of it.

If aiming is too easy, then the game is basically geometry wars, or a dumb RPG that is all about stat rolls.

But otherwise it is SO REALISTIC. Like, the first time I played it, I actually exited viscerally disgusted by the whole thing.

And yeah, you're an "elite soldier" but even elite soldiers need to maintain skills, are subject to the same laws of physics as the rest of us.

I think you could probably make a good game of counter strike out of these game physics. And the next CS had better be 3rd person cover based.

so can 99.9% of the rest of the population...whats your point?

He was clearly answering a question. Who are you to demand a 'point' explained from him? lol he has to prove that he has some grand plan at making a point of some kind to satisfy your curiosity?

I really love GTA4. I played the PC port too, which is supposedly horrible (not in my own experience though). Funnily, it's not the shooting mechanism that stuck by me (pretty average to bad, esp. with a gamepad). It's the self-deprecating humour and hilarious carjackings that really stood out for me.

It's just a "rail shooter" in a realistic setting. That's the only thing realistic thing about it...the modern era human setting. Everything else is just a aim and shoot straight like Quake.
Sure there's some varying of recoil, fire rates and reload times to the different guns. I happened to love rail shooters being an old school Quake player so right now MW3 is about the only thing that will do so in that essence I enjoy playing it.

I do however agree with most that in the grand scheme of things of how shitty the CoD series has become. Essentially a Madden like game where it's the same rehashed game, engine, etc with some slight changes each year. If there was better options out there, I'd play it but theres aren't many choices these days for good multiplayer shooter.

What stuck out to me was how everything was modeled.

For instance, when exiting a car, if you hit run too soon, you actually will not close the door. Attention to detail like that is impressive.

Fist fighting is even interesting. Like, it actually feels like an accomplishment when I beat someone to a pulp in the game.

And the way the game feels when I repeatedly run over someone in a car.

The PC port after several patches eventually became more playable. Or perhaps over time, people's rigs have just gotten stronger to handle such a crappy console port?

Speaking of GTA....wasn't there a very brief sneak preview of GTA V some time ago? Haven't heard much more about it since then. I love the GTA series and I agree, I couldn't care much about the shooting mechanics but just driving around like a mad man and the humor is what makes the series great for me as well.
