GT6800 for low end machine?

Hi all,

All the messages in the forum have suggested to get a R9800 Pro or 6800 GT if I got more money. But in most of the reviews in Anand, and a few other places, the system used is always an Athlon FX or P4EE. Would it be worth it if I only have a Athlon XP 2600 to get the 6800 GT card, or would my rig be so CPU limited that the R9800 Pro offers much better back for my $.

Thanks

you would still get quite a kick from it- but i would probably recommend going for a midrange card- a 6600gt or an x700.

I haven't seen the 6600gt or x700 around with AGP. That is the problem, and I don;t expect it to sell the same price as a 9800 pro. The shops are selling 9800 pro lower than retail to clear out their stocks.
I wish there's a benchmark using a middle end machine just to show whether upgrading to the latest video card is a good idea for a low end system

I certinaly wouldn't call the 2600 XP a low end CPU. You should see quite a bit of performance over a lower card. Most games are GPU limited not CPU limited.
