gt4 on 1080i ?

Did a couple quick searches, no luck.... maybe someone can help.

So anyhow, someone donated this HDTV to a college where I work. It's a Panasonic Tau. I didn't see any other model information on it except for "HDTV 1080i compatible."

So I plug in a PS2 this afternoon hoping to play some GT4 in 1080i mode. I start up GT4 and go into Options, and specify "HDTV (1080i)". When I hit OK it just goes blank. This happens no matter what video port I try. PS2 resets to regular TV after 15 seconds.

A couple of thoughts:
* TV damaged? Regular video works fine. (I should try a DVD later).
* Should I specify 16*9 in the setup of the PS2? Is there some other setting?
* Perhaps there's something I need to set on the TV, but I couldn't find anything (of course there's no remote).

Also I have zero experience with HDTV. I am using the regular PS2 component outs. (I think those are the only choice for output).
 
I dunno, I have a 34 inch Sony WEGA widescreen HDTV and mine works fine and look amazing. Make sure your TV really is HDTV and not just HDTV ready.

QFT, i'm running 16:9 1080i on a 65'' Sony LCD and it works fantastic.

I just got the MadCatz cables for 9.99 instead of those monster cables for 50+++
 
That's the impression I got looking around the HD forums after posting this 🙂 I was trying the included PS2 cables. So, would it not work at all, or just look worse? I get the impression I should at least be seeing something.

I have the slim PS2. For component cables, would I be using the "optical out" on the PS2?

So you guys think GT4 looks better on 16*9 1080i? Some people here think it actually looks worse than 480i (or whatever normal TV is called nowadays 🙂 ) I'm playing it on my regular TV, and the textures already look mighty low-res, but then again I've been spoiled by PC gaming recently!!!

Edit: The component cables are 5 cables, right, 3 for video and 2 for audio? I'm only running stereo...

This was what I was thinking. Component calbes should consist of a red, blue, and green video cables, along with the red and white audio cables. You'll know you're using the wrong cables if there is only 3, colored yellow, red, and white.

Also, once you're sure you're using the right cables, check your PS2 settings in the main menu for the system, and set the video setting to RGB**component** (can't remember exactly what it says).

Good luck. And if you don't get it working, don't fear. GT4 in 1080i only sharpens the picture immensely so you can see the jaggies better 😛. God bless Polyphonal Digital (or whatever their name is) for including it anyway.

Component: Red, Blue, Green video cables, typically with a Red and White cable for stereo audio
Composite: Yellow video, with Red and White stereo audio
Opitcal audio: Used only when you're looking for Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. This is never a required input, only optional. However, there is no game on the PS2 that supports DD5.1 in-game, only in cut-scenes and when playing DVD movies.
