Hello all,
I'm going for a new machine.Probably an Athlon II X4 with 8GB RAM, SSD drive etc.

The thing is i can't decide on the GPU.
Im in between these four chipsets:
GT240 for 105$
GT430 for 100$
GTS450 for 158$
HD5670 for 127$

All 1GB.Take into consideration that my main use of it will be for Adobe Suite (Photoshop and Illustrator in specific) and i won't focus on games so much.Which one would you prefer and why?Does CUDA matter so much for Adobe's suite?

depending on how long you wait.... a Llano could take care of that and be a "freebie" inside the cpu.

However:

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404898.html

Check out that page, I believe Adobe Photoshop can use OpenCL now.. Dont ask me which is faster CUDA or OpenCL for it though, I got no idea. I know Cuda has been around longer.

Safest bet is probably the GTS450... but you could do some research on your own, and probably figour out more than I can answear.

In short, Photoshop CS4 already takes advantage of the GPU in many ways by taking advantage of OpenCL.......guess what? It works on any video card that supports OpenCL.

This is nothing new, nVidia is simply trying to sell more GPUs by advertising the features that CS5 is taking advantage of on all GPUs to make it sound like its only nVidia supported stuff.

Honestly I'd get the 430 and see if the savings can be stretched far enough to upgrade to a PhII X4 BE. That L3 cache really does make a difference, and the unlocked multi makes for some nice overclocks, even if you want to keep things extremely modest. Stock v stock will still be faster though.

Thank you all for the replies.

Arkadrel yours was an eye opener!

This vanished my hesitation going ATI (although i knew from the start that it would suit better with the athlon), so i'm now in between these two:
- ASUS ENGTS450 1GB for 158$
- Sapphire Radeon HD5770 1GB for 183$

What would you choose between those two guys?Let me point out that it's not for professional or focused photoshop use.Just amateur and part-time.My main goal is to build an all around pc.Not a designer's one.

Arkaign yours, too. That's why decided to go for phenom.I had my hesitations beforehand, but not now.I believe it's worth spending some more for one.

EDIT

I want to say the go AMD... but.... CUDA has been around longer, so if you plan on doing alot of Photoshoping.... Id def. go with the 450.

If you want to do gameing,... well... the 5770 is about ~15% faster than a 450 factory OC card.

The 450 goes for around 110$ (on newegg)
the 5770 goes for around 100$ (on newegg)

Since your getting atleast 15%+ performance, more if compaired to a stock 450, and your saveing 10$, for gameing Id recammend the 5770.

Thats for the US... Im not sure what prices are like in Greek.
You should find out which sells cheaper, and if the 450 is like... 10-15% cheaper, you should probably go that route, if it isnt then the 5770.

I've posted the cheapest prices i can buy them.Check my previous message.

And consider a stock 450 when answering. Not factory overclocked.

I won't do a lot of Photoshop. It's not like i'm a professional and work every day with it.I just care more for a good Photoshop/Illustrator performance than games performance. But not that it will absolutely define my purchase, either, say for a slightly better performance. As i said i'm more concerned in building a well-balanced pc (incl. phenom ii x4 955, ssd, 23 ips panel, 8gb ram) above all other concerns.

The GT240 with DDR5 has been shown much faster than the 430. The 240 has 8rops while the 430 has 4. Not sure how much that helps in photoshop but just saying.

The 450 is the best for not only all have DDR5 but also the cores and such.

If money if really tight go with a 240 with DDR5. If you can spend the extra the 450 is great.

@TotalGreen, ahh yeah overlooked the prices you posted.

I think you should go with the 450 then, it makes sense, its the "safer" bet for photoshoping, and even if its 15% or more % slower, cost wise its 15% or so cheaper too, so value wise its not like your loseing anything.

Buy one, see how it overclocks and as long as gameing wise it has enough performance for your needs, that should be the best card for you.

Then choose on games, because even AMD IGP will be able to get you by using PS. For PS/Illustrator, you'd be better off with IGP or a cheap card, and a Core i5, than with a Phenom II and a $150 gamer video card (once you're up to the i5 level, then maybe a video card could be valuable, v. spending more on a CPU). But games would look like crap, and some would barely even work. Based on your prices, I think the 450 is the best value (unless you can get a 460 768MB w/ MIR), even a stock one. The Asus one mentioned has a nice cooler, too, should you want to OC.

Thank you all.I finally bought the asus gts450.

Good. If the fan spins up a lot and is loud take the heatsink off and clean it up a little.
My GTS450 was a little loud but got much more quiet, and cooler GPU, after I removed it and cleaned it up.

Nvidia is doing great when it comes to marketing - as can seen in this thread - but CUDA is of no use for you. I know, it's too late but these questions/answers come up every now and then and are rarely being refuted by anyone.
Pretty good Q&A thread.

Sorry to burst your bubble but some of the x2 quads can stomp on alot of versions of i5 it depends on what type of i5 processor you have they are not all the same just because you got an i5 don't mean you automatically beat an x2.

I mean Athlon 2 x3 and x4 machines and phenoms made a mistake and said X2.
