GT240 vs 5670 vs 5770

Sorry to keep coming back to the well for advice. I'm just trying to figure out how much to spend on a GPU for new SB build.

1) not a gamer
2) want to make sure I've got no compromises for HD video playback and editing
3) wrestling with how much to spend NOW vs future flexibility

My options are

a) EVGA GT240 $41 AR
b) Sapphire or XFX 5670 $65-70 AR
c) XFX 5770 $100AR

I have a good handle on the relative FPS and power performance between the 3. Have read lots of reviews. Questions (and what would YOU recommend)?

1) Are ALL 3 equal in terms of HD video playback and editing?

2) I am not a gamer now and unlikely to be one in the future. While I continue to "trade up" in my mind as I research (eg 5670 is good, but 5770 is really a lot better and its only $30 more....) I'm trying to decide whether paying up to get a more powerful card will net me any benefits UNLESS I play games. Its always nice to have the power just in case I change my mind, but I could also rationalize that its better to get the cheapest card now, and IF I decide to get into gaming in 1 or 2 years, just upgrade to whatever card is state-of-the-art at that time. A negative of the 5770 is that it takes more power and requires a PCI power. I will be using an Antec 380watt PSU, but it seems that load system power on all 3 is still no more than 250Watts.

3) re GT240 vs the Radeons, the Radeons have a few "newer" features like Eyefinity and something about bitstreaming sound, but I'm not likely to ever have 3 monitors and apparently the 5670 is too weak to really play games anyway at Eyefinity level. So are there any OTHER compromises that I'm making if I went for GT240 (besides a few FPS on Crysis or Batman which I won't be playing anyway). Any generic issues like "NVidia is worse than ATI so its better to go Radeon vs GEForce" or anything like that?

Thanks for any advice.

I'd probably go for 5670. In CF they have performance equal to a GTX 460 so they are decent light/medium gaming cards. Bitstreaming audio is useful for a HTPC card if you'll ever plug in to a TV/receiver and 240 doesn't do it.

What video editing software are you using? Depending on the software there may be no advantage to any of the cards or it might worrk well with onee or the other. For decoding probably any of them will work pretty well.

A 5670 will handle all your HD video and regular desktop usage flawlessly, and will play almost any game you throw at it. Brand new games may need the graphics settings turned down a bit, but will still run just fine.

If you were more inclined toward gaming, I would suggest the 5770 but if you're not then the 5670 is great.

Also, the GT 240 only supports DirectX 10.1 while the Radeon HD 5670 or 5770 are fully DirectX 11 compliant.

This only effects gaming and shouldn't matter with something like DXVA video playback, I believe.

The Geforce GT 430 is the latest from nVidia and it does support bitstreaming audio (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-MA) for HTPC and is DirectX 11 compliant as well.

They are typically in the $85 range.

Radeons don't get HD brightness levels right in Media Center unless you use the NominalRange registry tweak (Win7 MC only) or use LevelsWizard to fix it. Nvidia has an override setting in their control panel to fix this. Just something to be aware of. I'd look here as well: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=26/
If there are any other issues that don't get much general exposure (proper 23.976 support for example) they'll be posted there.

Ordered the XFX 1gb card......it's 5 bucks more to get 1gb rather than 512megs, plus comes with "lifetime warranty" whereas the Sapphire is 2 yrs. $69.99 assuming they don't screw me on the rebate.

I like the fact that it doesn't need a separate power cord. If I ever become a big gamer I'll just ebay it and get something better, but I'll bet that never happens.

Thanks for the advice.

Did you get this one? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150467.

Good choice, although that's a pretty big ($30) rebate. Still, if it comes through, it was probably the best value, since it costs about the same price after rebate as the 512MB cards and has the advantage of the lifetime warranty.

Yep that's it

Agree its a bigger rebate but I'm generally good about hounding people for rebates. Haven't lost one yet.......just make a copy of all the submission materials. Only once did I have some ya-hoo claim that they never got the envelope in the mail, but I faxed them the copy of everything and they just put it through at that time.
