Xbitlabs newsbit on GT212.

I know there have been delays on the 40nm lines, wondering when we can expect to see cards based on these new chips in the markets.

Anyone know anything new?

Thinking of a cheap GTX 260 but don't want to spend $175 if a next-gen card will be out in a month or two...

Yep. Im thinking GT212 has been scrapped in favor of keeping the GTX295 around (not to mention that nVIDIA are revising a single PCB solution for the GTX295). The true highend ala the GT300 will probably be released late this year, or early 2010.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the GT300 series should be DX11, right? From what I have heard, we will be lucky to see this in 2009.

Edit: SP

Yeah, GT300 was always rumored to be the DX11 part in Q4 09. GT212 was the part that was supposed to be the 40nm GT200 successor with ~1.5x the shaders + GDDR5 with most other specs remaining the same sometime in Q2.

There were rumors about problems with TSMC's 40nm process and the lack of a 40nm RV8xx that probably contributed to its cancellation. Makes sense, as a GT212 would have been the 2nd time Nvidia beat itself on the high end despite being the fastest part since GT200 launched. And we all know how much their board partners and "fans" hate those constant launches and rebrands. ;)

Hopefully TSMC's leaky 40nm process can be refined soon, otherwise, there is always the foundry company for Nvidia to explore...:p

Thanks for the responses, guys.

So
-If GT212 is scrapped
-GT300 doesn't launch until 4Q09 or 1Q10
-I guess the GTX 260/216 @ $175 is a pretty good buy?

(I mainly run F@H and light gaming so ATi cards are out.)

I am not disagreeing with anything being said here, but keep in mind that, to the best of my knowledge, only one source has reported that the GT212 was scrapped and it was a single short article in the Inquirer, and all speculation on the topic can be traced back to that one article.

That said, the internet consensus seems to be that it is probably true.

I'm secretly hoping NVidia make a GTX260 that has a shorter PCB around 9 inch or less so it can fit in my case - I doubt It'll happen though. 40nm and GDDR5 could make something like that possible though(?)

For light gaming it probably wouldn't be a huge upgrade, but from what I remember seeing at launch, GT200 is a huge increase in F@H output. Depending on how many PCIE slots you have you can also make use of those additional cards even if your board doesn't support traditional render SLI.

Haha... I'm sure TFC would take any business they can get, but there certainly would be a little sprinkling of irony there. Especially is AMD stuck with TSMC for their GPU's.

The 9800GTX+/GTS 250 works pretty well for F@H also, although they take more of a hit than the GT200 cards with some of the newer WUs coming down the pipeline. The 216/240 shaders on the GT200 definitely does help though versus the 128 on the older G92 cards (but these are higher clocked, so it's not a 1:1 comparison).

Take a look at my sig - I already do this with my 9800GTX+ and a G92 8800GTS. The GTX pulls ahead on some WUs so clockspeed definitely has an impact on ppd.

I don't see nV launching their first 40nm part as the first GT3xx series board. Tick tock has been working well for them, I don't expect them to change at this point.
