Hi all

I am looking for a laptop for general use, but to do some gaming at moderate settings on newer but not particularly demanding games. I have been looking at the
AMD APU, the A8 3500. I had pretty much ruled out the GT540M as I thought the AMD 6620G would be faster.

However, after doing more looking, especiallly at notebook check, it seems the GT540 might be as fast as the AMD APU or slightly faster. Would anyone care to comment on this comparison? One advantage of the GT540M would be that it would not share system memory and I could get a higher clocked dual core Intel CPU. I am somewhat concerned about the low clockspeed of the AMD cpu, even though it is a quad core.

I would be looking to play Starcraft 2 and the new one coming out, Skyrim, and Mass Effect 3 as the most demanding games. The other use would be for web surfing, you tube, and non demanding online games such as Minecraft and League of Legends, and online fighting games like dungeon fighter, etc, for my grandson.

I know to get really good gaming, a GT555 or GT560 mobile chip would be ideal, but models with those chips are getting more expensive than I want to pay.

Yes, the Geforce GT 540M is slightly faster than the Radeon HD 6620G at resolutions around 720p, such as those found in 14-15" laptops, with the difference melting away at higher resolutions due to the reduced ROP count of the GT 540. If you can find a laptop with an Intel Core i5 2400M + a Geforce GT 540M for a comparable price to a Llano A8 machine and don't think you'll make use of the extra cores, that's a better option. A quick look at Newegg shows a $150 price premium, which makes it a lot less compelling compared to the AMD options.

Make sure you don't get scammed into buying a laptop with an Intel Core i3 CPU, an older Core i5 400/500-series CPU, or a laptop that isn't Optimus enabled (if you get one with an nVidia GPU).
