GSM phone question

I am going over to Europe in a couple weeks and I about to get a new cell phone. I was looking at the Sony T616 from T mobile.

My question is will I be able to buy one of those pre paid sm cards over there and just plug it in?

Thanks

If you're buying the phone from Tmobile I Hear they'll help you unlock it. Just call them up and say you're going out of the country and they'll ask you for the code on the back of your phone and they'll give you the code to unlock your phone.

Thanks HiTek

Mobile PC mag just had an article on that, and some will help you and some will make it hell for you to unlock it, or you will have to take to a place to get it hacked.

Early T616's were unlocked, but were branded under ATT and Cingular networks. T610 from T-Mobile is locked. The only way I know to unlock these phones from your home is to download software and buy a data link cable. Nokia's are easier to unlock, as such software to generate unlock codes can be found for free somewhere...

I am on T-mobile and just got back from being overseas for 3 months. I unlocked my Samsung E715 via a cable on bought on Ebay. When I got off the plane I had coverage right away but I bought a German sim card since it was cheaper than roaming for that long of time, worked perfectly.

I use T-mobile and I got my Sony Ericsson unlocked by calling them. They asked me why I want it unlocked and I told them I was going overseas (I really was). They did in 1 business day. Basically, they send you a code through SMS and you use that to unlock it. I  T-Mobile.

T-Mobile did the same thing for me when I went to Mexico last summer with my t68i. It doesn't cost you anything - just call them and request the unlock code for your phone.
