So I'm traveling to Singapore. I do so a lot now so I'm planning on buying an unlocked phone and getting a pre-paid SIM card from SingTel.

The phone I was looking at was the Motorola W388. It says it supports GSM 850/1800. SingTel says they support GSM 900/1800. I'm guessing that means that there are either GSM 900MHz or 1800MHz spots throughout Singapore, correct?

So what if I'm not in a GSM 1800 spot? Is this phone going to work with it's 850MHz frequency if there's no 1800MHz signal available and only a 900MHz signal?

Thanks!

Ok.. Could be Amazon's listing for the phone is just wrong. On Amazon it says it's 850/1800, but on Motorola's website it says it's a 900/1800 phone. I guess there's nothing to worry about then.

Arrgh! There's two versions of the phone. 850/1800 and 900/1800. Grr! Back to square one. :(

I'm trying to keep my costs down, but it looks like a quadband phone is only going to be about $10 more so I think I'll just pull the trigger on that. :D

You can get a Samsung SGH-A437 on Ebay for $20 shipped.
Do a search on google how to unlock it yourself.
I've have bought this phone many times over and gave it to my relatives oversea to use.
