This is annoying.. I had to send in my 4-4-3-5 DDR2-800 memory because one stick failed. They just sent me back 4-4-4-12 DDR2-800 memory.. (same capacity)

Is this standard practice for GSkill?

I'd just send a message back letting them know that you did not receive equivalent memory back. They should correct this readily. GSkill has always been easy to deal with.

Hmmm, chances are they don't have any 4-4-5-3 memory left. We're talking 2x1gb sticks, right? I'd email them and explain what's wrong, if they can't send 4-4-3-5 ddr2 800mhz, they can send you ddr2 1066mhz ram, 5-5-5-12 maybe? Don't judge a whole company on one single experience, that's just wrong ...

Q: Is 4-4-3-5 memory going to be vastly different on the performance scale than 4-4-4-12 memory?

Now, I still think if they can't send you back 100% similar memory they should at least send you a note explaining that that was the closest they could find and at the least bump you up to better memory if they can't find something similar.

I question the claim that you even had 4-4-5-3 memory. I've never seen timings like that advertised, especially the last digit being lower than the first digits. I think OP is confused.

Heh. Sounds like Virtuallarry's the one confused. Or dislexic. Whichever.

Anyway, contact CS and see if they'll swap for DDR2-1000 or 1066 rated memory instead if they don't have your exact model stocked any longer. The performance differences are minimal between 4435 and 44412 but they should certain upgrade you slightly on RMA if the original isn't available rather than a slight downgrade.

If it is a discontinued item,.. which this definitely looks to be. The company (any company) will usually ship out a replacement that is closest to the original,... sometimes you will get a slight upgrade out of it as well.

Some DDR2-800 @4-4-4-12 lower volts are just as good as DDR2-1066 @5-5-5-15 higher volts. I am curious as to which they sent you as a replacement,... just cuz!

Anyways it is unlikely they will exchange for something else, but if they do,... most likely you will pay shipping and is it really worth the $$$ and time for a possible slight difference?

I just got an email back from G-skill....

Dear customer

The 4-4-3-5 DDR2 800 is no longer in production. The model we sent to you should have no problem to run 4-4-3-5 even it is rated at 4-4-4-12

Thank you
GSKILL SUPPORT

I bought 4-4-3-5 memory and paid more to get it (a year and a half ago) instead of 4-4-4-12. Also, memory that is stamped 4-4-3-5 is supported at 4-4-3-5... They're basically telling me to overclock.

I'll send them another email.. Yes, this is not worth my time for a single piece of memory.. But it is worth 'our' time to give us an idea of how good GSkill customer support is..

Hate to tell you, but pretty much any company out there will do the same sorta thing.

Stuff gets discontinued all the time, & when that happens, you will get whatever they deem as equivalent.

If you disagree, politely point out your perspective, & some will offer a credit toward a better kit, or offer an alternative, etc.

But that's how it works...
