GS2 Skyrocket battery issue when traveling

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket and I live in Michigan. A few weeks ago I traveled to Denver, CO for work. The GPS on this phone works great, so I used it to navigate from the air port to my hotel, about 15 minutes away. When I got off the plane and turned my phone on, I had 60% battery. Before I arrived at the hotel, I received the low battery warning (15%). I thought the service must have really sucked to use that much of the battery even with GPS on.

Anyway, when I got to my hotel I noticed I had great signal, 4G LTE and full bars. So I plugged it in to charge while I prepared to head to the place I was working. After almost an hour, it hadn't even charged up to 20% (from around 5% by the time I got to the hotel), which is unusual for this phone.

When I arrived at the place I was working, it was back down to 15%. So I plugged it in while I worked, still had good signal, 3-4 bars. A few hours later I checked the phone and it had discharged further down below 10%. So I turned the phone off and left it plugged in to charge, thinking in a few hours it SHOULD be fully charged. Picked it up 4 or 5 hours later and turned it on and it had only charged up to about 30%. Drove back to the hotel, another 10% drained so back down to about 20% battery remaining. I turned it off and let it sit on the charger overnight. In the morning it had only charged up to about 40%.

Same basic story the next day.

I returned home at the end of the second day and plugged it in at home and it was fully charged within a few hours and has been discharging/charging normally since then.

I'm trying to wrap my head around how my location in the US could make the phone charge differently. If I hadn't turned it off to let it charge, I'd have suspected it was something to do with the cellular network in Denver vs. Detroit, but it was powered off while on the charger for at least 6 hours and only gained about 20% battery charge.

I'm headed to Denver again in a couple weeks and I'm debating pushing my employer to get me a new phone before I leave. But, it would be kind of a pain in the butt to switch phones now, so soon before I leave town since I have so many apps and documents on my phone so I'd like to avoid that if possible.

TL;DR version:
Traveled from Detroit to Denver and phone wouldn't charge in Denver.
Came back to Detroit and phone charges normally.

Any ideas what could have caused this? I think I was using a different USB cable, could it be that the cable I was using wasn't capable of supplying the amperage that it needed to charge?

I would definitely blame the cable before the phone if you're using a different one for travel. Anything that could be causing battery drain would have been negated with the phone off, so that pretty much leaves the cable or adapters.

That's my thought too. However, after posting this last night, I grabbed the same cable out of my luggage and used it to charge the phone last night. Charged from 26% to 100% since I made the OP.
