GRUB error Help!

I am trying to boot from WIndows XP CD, after having Linux ( I believe) on it.

Get this error when trying to boot from CD

"GRUB loading stage 1.5
GRUB loading please wait
ERROR 22"

What can I do, the HD is completely formatted, why wont it boot from the WInXP CD?
I downloaded 2 different kinds of boot disks too. And selected to boot from CDROM.

One thing worth trying is to go into the bios and ONLY allow it to boot from CD, and don't allow it to "boot from other devices", and don't allow it to boot from ide0 ...

I've had some issues on one of my own systems where it was trying to boot off of the hard drive even though the cdrom was the first device in the boot order and I had a bootable OS install CD in the drive.

Good luck.

Your problem is you deleted the mbr or altered it to where it cant be read. You need to put in your xp cd, then boot to it, then get to dos, and type in fixmbr or fixboot. It will write a new mbr to the hard drive then reboot. Whalla, your done.

It wont boot to the CD. I even unchecked everything besides CDROM drive. now I get an error message saying
"No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry, F2 to reboot."

Wont boot into DOS from XP CD. The drive is spinning, and it appears to be reading it. But still nothing. It's a DELL Latitude C840 Laptop. I even tried USB external CDROM, but doesn't even support USB boot., at the moment. Looks like Linux wiped it out.

If you are 100% certain you've set up the boot sequence in the BIOS properly, then this problem means either 1.) the "CD" is not bootable, or 2.) the CDrom is unable to be booted from or 3.) The CDrom is unplugged

If you have tried with multiple boot disks, and none of the boot disks are working, (and if you are sure they were burned correctly), then I'd unplug and replug the IDE cable and the power cable to the CDrom drive, and try to boot again. Still no luck, then mabye switch out the CDrom (if you have another one available, even if it is just temporary.)

It's a laptop do I only have that one CDROM drive. And yes I have tried 2 different copies of Win XP CD's.

Have you ever booted off of those specific XP cd's before?
Do they have scratches on them?
Are they burned backup copies (and if they are, were they done with a raw copy, in order to get the boot sector, etc, or were they just done as a file copy?)

I would amost be willing to put money on them bein non-bootable CDs ...
Do you have any Linux distro CDs, or any other emergency boot CDs?
I won't be near the PC for a while ... so if you update it ... you may not see any more updates from me ... but hopefully this gets you on the right track.

PS, what Tbirdkid suggested should work great if you still have XP installed, and just are having issues with Grub ... (once you are able to boot off of the CD that is)

No it had Linux installed ONLY. Now I am trying to goto Windows XP , the HD is completely formatted.
I even tried loading a XP CD that was legit 😛 With XP logo on front and all... Those should have boot image on it, right?

And No I don't have any Linux distro CDs,

Hmm .... you tried just about everything ...
you should be able to boot off of the CD, I have no idea why it isn't working other than hardware problems with the CD rom, or some weird setting in the BIOS ... but usually Laptops have pretty limited bios options when compared to a full blown enthusiast PC mobo.

If I think of anything I'll post when I get back near a PC, otherwise good luck ...

Thanks, I am wondering why aswell. I just need to get to the DOS screen to do that Fdisk/MBR. Man....this sucks.

do you have a floppy drive? if so, go get a bootdisk from bootdisk.com and do it from there. I dont know if you will have the fixboot or the fixmbr on that disk, but you can easily put it on it and do it with that. Another alternative, is to make absolutely sure you have the bios set to the boot off cd rom as the first device, and it should work. some bios's have two sections where it says first boot device and then there is a section that says boot order or something like that.

Ok so I tried a new HD, and the GRUB error is gone, but now I get a "PXE error, media cable." Looks like the media cable for the drive is loose or something.....but that doesn't make sence since it worked perfectly for 3 years up until I took off Linux. Any thoughts?

PXE is for the network boot, if that's the last error you get then it's not even trying to boot from the drive.
