But the 30days is his bank not hannafords doing. I think my bank only help the funds for 2 weeks when money was taken out.

I agree, that's his bank's doing. I can only imagine how many customers will be bouncing checks and eating late fees if their accounts were cleaned out, while they wait for the bank to give them their own money back.

Wait... you don't bank with Bear Stearns, do ya? ;)

This sucks - I shop at Hannaford all the time

What's the deal here? They don't encrypt card numbers over their network??

I already have to call my bank for other possible fraud:

I ate at Houlihans on Sat. - bill was $37.51 - I add $6 tip - total $43.51

I paid with my MasterCard checking card - today I see a charge for $50 even online

Did they overcharge me or is this somehow normal?

Same thing happened to my girlfriend, but at Trudy's here in Austin, TX.

$10 bill + $2 tip, $12 and $24 charges appeared. The $12 went through, but the $24 was pending for several days and eventually disappeared.

Someone cleaned out our checking account a few weeks ago. Found out at around 7pm one night. I had all the money back by noon the next day.

I would talk to your bank

Did you keep the receipt? You have two options:

1) Go back to Houlihan's and ask them to credit your card $6.49. If you have the receipt and a copy of your card transactions, they are pretty much required to credit the difference.

2) If that doesn't work, call your card company and get them to reverse the entire transaction.

What's up with the recent spike in card fraud?

I didn't keep the receipt, but I would assume the restaurant keeps them in case of dispute? I'm not going to drive there and use my gas to fix their error. Do you think they can fix it over the phone? If not I suppose I could have my bank reverse the transaction - they won't have proof for a $50 charge.

This is why I preach the use of credit cards instead of debit cards, $50 limit by law.

You can call and ask to speak to the manager, but I have always had better luck visiting the institution. You can always call your bank and ask what you can do about the charge. Explain the situation and see what they say.

There's nothing you need to do. In a day or two, you'll see the $50 charge disappear, and the actual $43.51 charge replace it.

This is typical of restaurant charges and gas purchases. When your card is swiped, they pre-authorize an amount because they don't know yet what the ACTUAL charge will be (you haven't left a tip yet, or you haven't pumped your gas yet). Then in a day or two the pre-authorized charge goes away and the actual amount is applied to your account.

wouldn't the $50 be pending though and not already deducted and on a statement line?
