grrrrr..... wife and kids and adware.

I noticed the stupid wild tangent icon in the running processes.. (grr!) - wife and kids had just downloaded a new "cool" online game.

Oddly, I ran spybot and adaware just 2 days ago before wild tangent was there. Suddenly, spybot can't load the reference file nor download a newer reference file. And, adaware gets stuck with "invalid parameter" pop-ups galore. (or vice versa). GRR!
Now, it's going to take effort to get rid of the friggin spyware.

1) buy seperate computer
2) only let wife and kids use that computer
3) they f*** it up, it's their fault
4) prepare to format the computer weekly.

yep. have your computer and a family computer.

ghost the family computer when they bitch about it not working.

We have a computer for the kids, but I have to order a new power supply for it (in fact, their computer is faster than mine - well, newer than mine 🙂 )
And, we're getting a new computer in the next week or two as well... may wait to see what nice deals black friday may potentially bring.
Waiting for the new debit cards though, so I can order online.

Adaware started goofing up for me too, wouldn't update the reference files. Spybot works fine. But Zone Alarm gave me a warning on a program called blackboxthrow.exe that wanted to access the internet at around the same time Adaware started acting funny. Anyone hear of that program or know where it came from? My system is pretty well protected on the whole, so I was puzzled when this new program showed up. I don't download games or screensavers or crap like that.

Yes. But make a drive image of it working and keep it on a seperate partition. Every time they have a problem, just restore from the partition. If they don't like it, tell them to fix it themselves.

I googled it, it seems to be associated with MSN in some way. Do you have MSN Messenger or Explorer installed?
Not sure what it is or what it does with MSN though.

Make use Virtual PC for the times other users are utilizing the machine?

At worst, if a spyware/malware infiltration becomes terribly serious, merely rebuild the .vhd (virtual hard disc) file (or better, instantaneous point to a backed up copy of such) - no downtime to the non-virtual machine. Also lovely features that allow one to "discard changes" upon closing the virtual machine down.
