Grrrrr! Getting STOP errors when using DVD/CERW drives

As I'm installing a large application or game, Windows 2000 will generate a STOP message -- something about ntoskrnl.exe. Dump the memory and reboot. It does a chkdsk on reboot and everything is fine again. This ONLY happens when I'm using the DVD drive or the CDRW drive which are both on the secondary IDE cable.

Motherboard: Epox 8kta3

Any ideas?
