Is there any way to convince a small local computer store that they should hire you part-time, even though they claim that the computer technician opening is full-time only? Or is this impossible and should I revert to my scheme to take over the world using discarded AOL CDs and spud launchers?

The problem is,is they need a full-time employee, and you can only work part time. They still need to cover the time you can't be there, and it is a bit tougher hiring part time. (schedule flexibility, etc..)

Work there for free...

I've got no problem trying that, but wouldn't it seem a little suspicious (I'm in NYC, where scams are somewhat commonplace) that someone wants to volunteer to do work for free?



As for the scheduling issues, I looked at their pricing chart - in-store tech support is $40 an hour: what should they care if the computer spends a few hours lying around waiting for me to fix it?

First...have a positive attitude. Then...THINK and THINK HARD!!

You may want to propose that you work as close to the amount of hours as the &quot;full-time&quot; position would and cut your rate to be as competitive as possible.

If you REALLY want the job, you could even become self-employed to encourage them further.

Some of you may disagree with what I am saying but, I have done similar things and ended up with great jobs and what I wanted to begin with. Just have to know how to negotiate.

wow, $40 an hour? Are there lots of computer shoppes? Around here the cheapest I've ever seen was $79. Most are around $100.

I'm self employed and very good at my job... I charge ... more.

oh, and I started my business when I was 16. I did not make LOTS of money early on but it happens with time and experiance.

Actually I just moved into the neighborhood so I don't know much of what's around, but I did exploring of the busiest areas and only found this computer store - luckily 1 block away from home. I guess the amazement of them being that close, me not having a job (only 16 years old), and them posting a help wanted sign kinda got me overly excited about finding something to do.

I'll consider going in there again tomorrow or the day after and see if something can be worked out, but me being 16 (there is an unwritten belief from what I can tell in computer stores that if you are young or don't have one of the allmighty 'certifications', you are unqualified) doesn't help things - having neither the experience of negotiating for a job, and difficulty speaking to strangers doesn't help.


As for self-employment, I'd love to but don't know how. This is a large city and it's hard to compete - especially when a store with reasonable prices (1 ghz PIII system for about $700) is nearby.

I hope you know what $40/hr is for the whole store. Not just for the tech.

RGN: On average, most places will charge as high as that for rush same day service. If not, plan on letting your computer sit in the store for a day or so.

Do you know what they put in those? Usually 64MB RAM, ATI Rage IIC..crappy stuff. Thats why they sell it so cheap and people don't know.

I know, they put crap in the systems (I don't remember if it was 64 or 96 MB RAM), but there were a few expensive things - notably the 60 GB HD (5400 RPM no doubt, but still brings up the price a good $100 or so). Most stores would probably raise the price of the computer 1-2 hundred, and it kinda surprised me that they didn't, considering the lack of (as far as I can tell) competition around here.
