Ok. My boyfriend is in an online MIS class. First thing that bugs me is that the professor has this policy that if you miss up to two tests (out of 10 or11), the zeros will be dropped, but he won't drop everyone's lowest two grades. Everything went fine until it was time for the final.
So my boyfriend, being dilligent, takes it the first day it is out (they are given 3.5 days I think) to get it over with. The final is a whole hell of a lot harder than the tests, so the first time he takes it, he does poorly, and then retakes (they are allowed up to 3 submissions, averaged) and does better. Then the server that the test is on goes down, and the teacher announces that for the people who haven't taken the final, it doesn't count for them, but for those who have, it does count. After 2 days, the server goes back up, and the teacher stretches the due date 2 days and THEN says that the final may or may not be taken for those who haven't taken it yet!
Now, what happened is that they have a Yahoo group for this class and the teacher had asked what he should do, and took the first solution that anyone had suggested, without thinking it over or asking everyone else what they had thought (that is, making the final count for those who have taken it, and giving the option to those who hadn't taken it yet). I hate to use the word, but is this fair? Why doesn't he just make the final optional to EVERYONE?
So my boyfriend and others in the class have been posting their arguments rationally and logically, and other students just reply, "nah nah nah nah nah, you just want a better grade so shut up," and the professor replies, "I'm the teacher and I'm right so shut up" (in a nutshell
). What *I* think is happening is that the teacher doesn't want to admit that he's wrong. People are calling him unethical, and he's only replying to people who are agreeing with his policies or picking out parts of the messages from people who are not agreeing with him, and twisting them around to look wrong. It's absolutely disgusting. I want to strangle this man.
My boyfriend has gone down to argue with him, and basically says "I'm right and not changing, go away." So I guess he's going to the dean or the MIS dept next. Just want to know if this whole thing is cause to be upset over, and who is wrong in this case. Not asking for support necessarily that we are right, just asking what people think.
And thank you for reading
Edit: Oh yeah, one other thing he does: people will raise valid concerns and problems with this whole new grading policy, and he will write some random paragraph and copy-paste it to EVERY message...even though 9/10 of them don't have anything to do with what he's copy-pasting. And the paragraph will be rude. He has no sense of etiquette.
(ps, yes I know life isn't fair)
