It will be hard to improve athletical performance (for you that would be to run further) when cutting down food in general. This will DRASTICALLY affect your ability to run properly. I bet back in HS you weren't 'concerned' with eating like you are now and that helped a lot.

Your back pains is an indicator of bad posture.

Do you warm up and stretch BEFORE RUNNING? This is very important also. Jog 400m or so and then stretch yourself.

USE THE SHOES YOUR BRO bought you. GOOD running shoes that SUIT YOUR RUNNING STYLE IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT. I can not stress this enough.

Up it to 2-3x a week. The 2nd or 3rd session you can just run half of it and walk half the rest. BUILD UP TO IT. You may not be a sadist like me and like to break yourself to bits. A lot of people often give up. Build up to it .

Keep us updated on your efforts and your running partner will drastically improve your ability to run to no end :). I use to run okay but I couldn't be bothered with it. I ran with a partner and we both pushed each other hard as neither of us wanted to give up.

I did, I suggested running shorter distances more times a week rather than longer distances once or twice a week. I also suggested using a treadmill or eliptical machimne at a gym as it would be easier on his joints and feet which might enable him to run longer distances and burm more calories.

You should run 3-5 times a week

Running once a week 2-3 miles wont get you to be able to run a whole lot more....

I started out running 1.5 miles and worked up to 4-5 miles fairly easily.. I Was 240lbs 6'2 when I started, 200 lbs when I was worked up to 4-5 miles.

He had said we was an old runner...I am thinking (like I said though it's hard to tell with just a post) it's something contributing to his lack of endurance.

So form, nutrition, and supplementation I suggested. To build endurance as a runner, you need to run longer, not shorter. Frequency is a big thing though...I not know of anyone that could do a marathon each day and not have physical problems.

3 miles is a pretty short run for a runner....many that shoot for longer distances do 5-7miles pretty regularly with a 10 mile/11km through in here and there.

I would head over to a running forum though. I don't think many people here exercise and if they do a lot of the advice on the threads I have seen is the stuff you just 'hear' but doesn't really work or apply to the situation.

Looks like you've been taken care of, but I'll add my two cents anyway. Yes, you definitely NEED to run more than once a week. You lose almost everything you accomplished by running 3 miles after 6 days of inactivity. You should be running at least 3 times a week. Do core work to help your back problem; lots of crunches, bicycles, etc and anything that will strengthen your back as well. I generally don't believe in taking supplements or sticking to a fixed diet as it's just so strict and un-natural, and supplements tend to be rather sketchy but for joint pain glucosamine-chondoitin has been shown to work well. Get some good shoes from a real running store if you haven't already, run on trails or a track if possible.
