Grrr, Muvo2 problems (4GB type). How do you get it to connect to the PC?

I don't think this is the wrong forum, as it's gadget related and not really computer stuff.

Have a 4GB Muvo 2 that has the 4GB microdrive removed. I replaced the CF with a Sandisk 256MB and power the unit up, get the selection menu, but just says memory error (running Firmware 1.10). I tell it to reload the firmware, attach to the pc, etc. but it always says media error. Flipped the card around, same thing. Tried a different card. Same thing. Flipped that card around. Same thing.

1st: How is the card supposed to be oriented in the camera? Front label facing the PCB stuff, or front facing the front of the case?

2nd: Why won't it connect to the computer? Seems like it should do this even without memory installed.

I tried installing their software, and nada. I'd feel better if I could figure out why the PC won't see it.

Where am I going wrong? Tried different cables, tried my USB hub, tried the back of the PC. Nuttin.

But would this keep my PC from seeing the device? That's what I find most irritating. If I knew that the wrong media would keep the PC and Muvo from seeing each other, I'd feel a bit better.

And on the media, is it Muvo specific? Like am I screwed in that this Muvo won't work with any? Or are some pieces of media more finiky than others (like some 256MB Sandisks more picky than other 256MB Sandisks).

I took the microdrive out of my Muvo2 this morning.

1) The front label faces the case.

2) The problem I had "connecting" was that when I reassembled everything I didn't get the button board properly reconnected to the main board. There is a little male/female connector that you have to make sure snaps in properly. If you press down right by the power connector that should do it. If you have no issues using the buttons then this isn't your problem, but when you first reboot after inserting the new media a menu should come up that you can scroll through. Use that to test your buttons.

3) There is a newer firmware, 1.12. Get it here: http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/

4) I had no media problems, but I replaced the 4GB Microdrive with my old 1GB Microdrive.

Edit:
5) Make sure you use the USB connector they supplied. For some odd reason when I used the connector that came with my digital camera the computer couldn't see the Muvo2, but when I plugged in the one they suppled it was fine. I had assumed that they were the exact same connectors, but I guess not.

Yes, I got mine in the mail yesterday from Amazon.

I believe that they are also using that drive in the mini Ipods. Why wouldn't they? They can get them cheap directly from Hitachi. It's not like they are losing money or sales by using it. If people want to void their warranties by taking the drive out that is their decision.

i heard that Hitachi stopped making them, since people can just pay $200 for a Muvo 2 instead of the $400+ retail drives.

I highly doubt that. Hitachi doesn't sell these drives retail. They make them and sell them to other companies like Creative and Apple and Buy.com. Other stores may have stopped selling the $500 retail version of the 4GB microdrive, but Hitachi didn't stop manufacturing them. This doesn't cut in to their profits one bit. It actually helps sales.

I received my Muvo2 today (ebay). It did not have a 4gb drive ever, so ... I have an existing 128 CF card and found it going to that Recovery Mode 1.00, if I try to flash the device the 1.10 firmware I get a media error, so I opened it up and installed my 128mb CF card on there, and I still receive this error, the front label is facing toward the front or am I seeing this wrong?

to make things clear as mud, CF cards have a thing slot on the edge and a wide one as to prevent installing backwards. Does the wide side face the play button?

This place has nice pictures: Microdrive extraction

I had problems at first too, but once I upgraded my firmware I could finally format the drive and I was on my way. I too put in a 1GB Microdrive (without bothering to cut holes for that little spot that shouldn't be covered).

I'm still on 1.11 though.

BTW: Amazon.com doesn't show a "new price" for me... Kyteland: You said you received yours recently, but when did you order it?

I currently have a 128mb card, it's the one I use for my camera. I plugged it into the Muvo2 but I kept getting the Media Error message for any task via the Recovery Mode.

Do I just need to get a hold of another media that "will" be recognized by the Muvo2?

btw, the 128 is CF I iirc, I suppose the CF must be CFII type?

Thanks,

I got media errors too until I upgraded the firmware (by plugging the muvo2 to the computer and activating recovery mode -> firmware upgrade as described by the firmware update thingy). After that I just formatted the muvo2 drive (again from the PC) and Bob's your uncle.
