grrr...Is there anything I can do about ATT's download cap?? It sucks bigtime :(

I used to be able to download at over 800k a second, and now, no matter what, I'm stuck at something like 180k a second. This, quite frankly, sucks. Upload caps were one thing, but download caps? Ugh 🙁

I can't think of any other options....DSL won't be any faster really (at the same price level at least)....man ATT sucks. They took away our static IP's, crippled out speed, and left us out to dry for a week.

bah! :|

pg19, are you talking about KB (kilobytes) or kb (kilobits)?

You can't do anything about it, it's done on their end, not on yours (unless they told you to download and install their "set_cap.exe" software 🙂)

I'm talking KB...so yea, 800k a second from my favorite FTP...and now I am a cripple!

I want set_cap.exe 😉

Just get Download acellerator , it will connect up to 7 times to a host & will speed up download considerably.😉

It's not a cap on each download...it's on my total downstream bandwith. So that would just slow down all my other downloads.

this sounds crazy but....

me and a friend networked mine and his computers together set mine up first then his in office xp pro
no internet on network.

when we were done playing he took his home hooked it up to his att connection (no software loaded)
he was getting 1900 kb or 1.9 mb per sec but hes paranoid IMHO lol and decided to run the firewall
which meant he had to undo the changes to enable the xp firewall his downloads immeadiatly after that
180 - 200 kb

the funny thing is he had it running 1.9 long enough to get me (stuck on 56 k since my fourth dsl company bit the dust) mohaa both single , multiplayer, and the map. one is over 130 mb the other is 183 mb.
approx took him about 2o mins ( for single player) as we were talking on the phone .

next weekend we are going to try and recreate the same setup and see if it jumps back up to 1+ mbsec.

AT&T caps your download speeds so they don't go broke like @home did. The days of getting unlimited download speed is over so get use to it.

If the man wants complain he can. Instead of ATT trying to get new customers, they should satisfy the ones they already have (Not that i'm not satisfied w/ my cable connection from them, but I don't get crapped on like these other guys do.)

Why should AT&T continue down the same stupid path that lead to @home's demise? No company can afford to offer all its customers unlimited download bandwidth for $50 a month.

Personaly I just had my Cable connection put in last wensday and I'm greatfull for the speed increase over my 56k. When the Guys were here installing everything they said ATT was going to offer a special service upgrade soon(for more money of course). 2.5mbs down and 512 up I think it was, im not sure but either way they are going to offer higher speeds *SOON*

I have a feeling that @Home will be remembered as the "good ole days". I remember when I didn't have an upload cap on @Home as well. That was beautiful - I could pull ~2.8Mb/s down and push 1.4Mb/s up with latencies that were under 20ms. But still even with the upload/download caps, DSL doesn't come close (at least locally) in terms of bang/buck. I can get 640Kb/256Kb DSL locally for $45 ($30 telco + $15 ISP) - and these are maximum transmission rates, not guaranteed. And the $15 ISP sets maximum bandwidth caps per month - to avoid those, I'd need to pay $20. I'm sure that it's different elsewhere, but no matter where you are I'd think AT&T@Home is still better bang/buck than the alternatives.

<< I'm content w/ my download rates. Avg about 180 - 250 KBPS >>

uhm....KBps is kilobytes and Kbps is kilobits...so you have all the Bandwidth where you are at? oh 1.4 Mbps down 222Kbps up ADSL only had one disconnect in the last 65 days 😉

i'm content with my cable download speeds, i max out at about 500KB/sec (thats kilobytes), which is 4 Mbits. however my upload is capped at 128Kbit (16KB) a sec which blows whale sack.
