Grrr, I always regret promising to help people with their PC's

So my roommate says he wants some extra RAM, and I have a couple of sticks laying around. I tell him I'll sell them to him for cheap, and install it in his computer (which is like 5 feet away from me at the moment). No biggie, right? I'll pull his system open and pop it in, so it's nothing for me to say I'll install it. Yesterday, he comes up to me and says "hey when you go home this weekend, bring up that RAM. I was talking to my father and he said he wants it for his PC, you said you'd install it, right?". His dad's computer isn't 5 ft away, rather it's a long drive from school away. :|

grrr, I'm fvcking finished helping everyone out except for my good friends and family :| Whenever someone mentions something about a computer, I'm keeping my mouth shut and pretending like I know nothing.

since i travel to repair computers for a living, i've started giving the excuse of "hey, do i ask you to (insert whatever they do for a living) on the weekends?"

I simply quote my hourly rate for "friends and family"
That usually takes care of it.

BTW: I totally agree. Ignorance (when it comes to someone askin you to fix their computer for free) is BLISS!

i've gone from working electronics (computers) in Best Buy, Electronics manager at Staples, and now i'm at Kmart. There's an opening and they're pushing me to take it, but i'm tired of working over there. It's just not fun anymore.

Next time they ask you, ask them this:

I have some itchy balls and need them scratched... will you scratch them for me?

I'm beginning to regret doing anything to a PC that isn't my own. I just upgraded my sister's computer as an early Christmas present; new motherboard, PIII 733EB FCPGA, 256MB SDRAM, 30GB Maxtor 7200RPM, and sound card, going from an ancient ALI/K6-2/64MB system.

After spending about two hours wrestling with sound card driver issue, which I resolved with a back-up of the registry, everything seemed to be going well. I was overclocking the PIII to 825 using 150MHz FSB, but everything was rock solid. I ran Final Reality benchmark looping simultaneously with P6 Burn at normal priority for about four hours uninterrupted. No problems.

So I finished up and left, she comes home, begins using the computer and all hell breaks loose. It never fails....

I've long since learned my lesson. I don't tell anyone I know anything about computers unless they also know about computers. It's just asking for trouble.

yep, i definetly spend a whole lot more time fixing "friends" computers for free than my own. i draw the line when those "friends" ask me to fix their friends computers because they know i just love doing that kind of irritating, tiresome and repetitve stuff. ugh... :(

I just take care of that problem by being an @sshole. That way, people not only leave me alone about computers, they don't ask me for anything at all. :)

Just tell him you can't install it in his father's computer. He changed the terms of the deal. So you have the opportunity to back out if you like.

Whenever someone mentions something about a computer, I'm keeping my mouth shut and pretending like I know nothing.

I started doing it a long, long time ago. Just be silent. There's a lot of morons who can't install Windows, don't know jack about what drivers are and if they know somehow that you like to play with computers you're in a big trouble. They will be asking you to fix their crapboxes all the time and each time anything goes wrong, they think it's a pleasure for you to help.

I only help my closest friends and family. Other people, I say no or make up an excuse. I've learned my lesson after people calling at 11:30 at night asking why their dial up is not working. Grrrr..... I still get some calls like that here and there.

Dude is a user--of people. He is not your friend. Deal was for his computer in the room you were in. Any other deal does not apply.
He'll make an issue of that, b/c he is a user of people.
You'll never be able to trust this guy.
If he persists, just smile like you're kidding, and say: "F*** you".

Let me just add this: if you do this "revised" deal for him, you are a chump and deserve everything that befalls you now and in the most certain future.
PS buy some vaseline.

I've probably built a hundred computers for people over the past 8 years or so and it never ceases to amaze me how much they expect from me when I give it to them.

Usually, I buy the operating system.. And they usually lose the disc and expect me to have a replacement.

I built a perfectly stable (when all fans are not clogged) computer... only to have it go unstable.. When I come over to fix it, I find tons and tons of dog hair or something else clogging the fan.. Then I'm expected to fix it for free when I make barely any profit in the first place because it was more of a favor.

I swear.. For some reason too, in college, people will ALWAYS get upset if I ask for money... But for some reason, they'd always rather buy me two 12packs of beer (usually Heinekken) instead of give me $20. The beer usually comes out to $24. Weird, huh? Guess it's okay for me to drink, but not okay for me to pay the electric bill.

And the next person who asks me for help on chat is gonna get a beat-down. I will come over there and beat them with spare computer parts I have laying around.

Also, why the fvck do I always have to help someone who bought a DELL or COMPAQ, that they make practically impossible to upgrade, upgrade their computer - usually something that would normally constitute buying a new comptuer!!! ARGGGHHH

/me runs over to his Heinekken and calms down

My next door neighbor is a pleasant old woman and I don't mind terribly helping her out with such issues as I'm able to, but she'd have been better off if she'd spoken to me BEFORE buying crap computers in the first place, not to mention that she got herself into one of those detestable Compuserve contracts, UGH!!
