so i took cultural anthropology this semester as part of my liberal arts requirement at UT because my friend said it was easy. looking back, yes the course was pretty damn easy. i got a 96 on the first test, 85 on the second. those count for 40% of my grade. my final counts 50% and the other 10% goes to participation/quizzes. i did flawlessly on all quizzes but 1, which may have hurt slightly (less than 2% of my grade). got my final back and somehow (still haven't figured this out because i thought i did quite well) i get a 74. no biggie, i think; i should still have an easy b. i go to look at my grade report online and i have a C. WTF?! i send an e-mail to my TA asking how that could have happened. she e-mails me back saying my final grade was a 78%! omfg 78! she said i didn't participate enough in class and never sent in her questions on things i found difficult or confusing (hello this class is a sleeper, nothing is hard) and so she brought my grade down from a B! i'm so angry! my first C in college and it's because my TA is a complete bitch. ok i'm done, lunch time!

A lot of professors will do that. Were you warned at the beginning of the semester about class participation?

that's the thing. there were 5 different TAs for the course. they all allocated their own grades how they saw fit. i felt i participated enough during the TA sessions (which is where the participation came in) but apparently i didn't. mostly the sessions were loosely run and high unorganized. most of the time she would ask us to get into groups and talk about the reading for the week (presumably because she didn't know what the hell she was doing).

i'm not going to challenge the grade or complain to the professor, as it will be a further waste of breath. my other grades this semester have already negated the C in the class, but it's still annoying that she would take off points and give me a C for the semester.

I would absolutely complain to the professor. Worst case is he/she tells you no. Best case is you get the grade you earned.

since i'm home in houston (at least for a few weeks) my grandma came over and made roast beef! yummy!

it was actually 4.4/10 for participation. then i had 8/10 for quizes. she actually said "The remaining majority was attendance, participation, quizzes, and the final. Your grades in all of these were between 4.4/10 and 8/10, which brought down your midterm/essay grade." out of the whole semester i think i missed 2 or 3 TA discussion sections (we have them once a week) towards the end of the semester.
