I swear this has been the 3rd or 4th time in the month that i've had to do a java update. maybe it's because i use 3 different machines and maintain two more, but the frequency of java and adobe flash updates is pretty annoying, not to mention i can't just tell my parents to hit "ok" because it wants to install mcafee or some other crap.

What is the actual reason? It didn't seem like Java started updating this often until fairly recently. Or is just Oracle being jerks?

Adobe reader/acro does the same thing. What are they updating every 2 days? For free software I am surprised the keep it updated so often.

And why does Adobe require a restart of the machine half the time? so annoying

Uninstall Java. It's not actually needed on the internet, and who really is running Java applications at home? All it's good for these days on internet-facing clients is for getting quickly exploited.

Now if Flash were that easy to get rid of...

I find it interesting that some people are annoyed by updates and that companies will even apologize for updating software. I love software updates. I love the fact that something I own or use has just magically gotten better. It's not like you have to manually compile the new code yourself. You're just clicking on a few buttons. Is it really that arduous?

I think it's quite possible you are not installing correctly and are thus getting reminded of the same update repeatedly.

A lot of people run Java applications on their personal computers.

There is nothing wrong with Java at this point. You see a small 10-20% slowdown, but that usually gets negated by profiling and real-time compilation. I've actually seen cases where a Java program will beat a C program in performance.

I can relate. The problem is it prompts you for update, then you go through update process, then ultimately it tells you have the latest version on your computer. The next time you turn on the computer it prompts you the same thing.

i personally dont care about updating my machine. but when my parents call to ask if its ok to install something thats when i get annoyed. i tried disabling auto update for java too, but it doesnt seem to work, and if it did, it might leave security holes or what have you. i might just uninstall it from their machine, they prob never go to a site that uses it anyway. ( i'll never hear the end of it if they do)

I understand where you're coming from. The way I have dealt with that is to take administrative rights away from my parents. It is amazing how (many?...not sure of the grammar of this sentence) fewer problems crop up when you don't give them the power to screw up their computers. ;)

Then I "dial-in" and do some maintenance every so often.
