Grr! Sniping on ebay should be illegal!

This sucks! I desperately needed a hard to find part for my camera (an item that's rarely put up for bid) and some jack ass sniped the auction! I would have definately upped my bid if I had a chance - do I have any recourse? Could I complain to anyone or should I just be unethical myself and buy a sniper?

Proxy bid will beat out any sniper so long as your max bid beats whatever they put in as the "snipe" bid IIRC.

However, isn't it possible that the seller could be jacking up the price on the item by using another bidder... hmmm there's a word for it... I can't think of the name....

but I guess I'm just not very trusting of people....

Well, I put what I thought was a fair max bid.. He out bid me by a buck... i would have gone more if push came to shove (if he outbid I would have kept on bidding).. It just feels so wrong though...

Make up your mind. Either you put the max your where willing to pay or didn't. You can't have it both ways.

If it was a fair maximum bid (for you) than someone else was willing to pay more than you were. If you were willing to go higher than the bid, you should have waited until the last minute and come in with your maximum bid. Just because he beat you by a buck doesn't mean that was his maximum bid. You are the highest bidder by the next highest increment (unless there is a reserve). For example, your maximum bid is 10 dollars. The sniper can come in at the last minute and bid $20.30. He would win the auction at $10.50 or $11 if no one else bids because of the increment thing.
Next time, either BIN or bid your maximum at the very end.

You will always get outbid by $1 or $5 or whatever the increment is. If you would have gone more, than you underbid. Next time bid the MAX you want to pay!

It really shouldn't be that hard. What I don't understand though, is why doesn't Ebay extend the auction another minute is someone bids in the last minute? That gives someone a chance to rebid, thereby giving ebay a higher profit. It makes sense to me.

^thought they tried that idea and ended up having an aution go on for a couple days or sumptin? just like with every other service theres always a few that mess it up for the rest of us...but realy if ur bidding on a rare part i always find it better o email the seller and let them know how much u need it and try to deal with them beforehand...most of the time they can either find another or make sure that u get it...

Why would ebay care if the auction goes on for another two days? The sale price must be skyrocketing, which = bigger fees for them and a much greater profit for the seller. Hell, if the seller wants to get his money ASAP and is willing to forgo the extra money, make it possible for him to end the auction. If ebay wanted to stop sniping, it doesn't look like rocket science to me.

Dude, it all comes down to the fact that you didn't put in the *most* you were willing to pay. If you would have done that, you probably wouldn't have lost. Deal with it.

I'd say the easy way to solve is put a max of 20 or 30 minutes extra that an item can go. Or, just make it the sellers choice of how much longer they willl allow
