My 81 year old dad is visiting from the Czech republic, which is great. He goes back to CZ on Friday, which sucks.

Last Friday night my Aunt (who is 75), informed me that she would be coming to visit (from across the country) this past Monday, and that she would be staying at our place. She said she wanted to see my dad before he leaves, so of course I agreed despite the short notice and the fact that she moves as though she is carrying 1000lbs on her back at all times.

Given that my father is occupying the one guest room (i.e., my wife's office) that we have, we set my Aunt up in our finished basement. In the summer the basement is often the most comfortable place in the house, as it stays nice and cool at 68 degrees when the rest of the house is roasting (we lack central AC).

Anyway my Aunt arrives hunky dorry, we have dinner the first night she is here, then she wants to go to bed. My wife and I get her set up, and call it a night ourselves.

Fast forward to the next morning. I go down in the basement to get something from my office and immediately notice something is wrong. The basement is HOT. As in hot as the pit of hell. Not to mention it smells like a stable that has not been mucked out in two weeks. Despite the onslaught of putrid odor and foul heat I venture downstairs to discover that the thermstat in my basement is set to 90 degrees F. Yes, NINETY! Cursing under my breath I turn it down to 75, a more "reasonable" number despite the fact that we are experiencing some of the hottest days of the year in the Seacoast of NH. I get the stuff from the Office, flee to the (surprisingly cooler) upstairs, and go to work.

That afternoon I come home to find the house empty. My aunt and father have apparently gone gallavanting around town in my truck, which is fine. What is not fine is that I discover that my basement thermostat is, AGAIN, set to ninety friggin degrees (which happens to be the exact same as the temperature outside). Not only that but the lights and TV are on, with the volume blasting. I asked my Aunt about it and she said that she "could not figure out" how to turn off the TV (i.e., push the power button on the remote), and that she was sorry about not turning down the thermostat when they left at 10:30 that morning! I told her not to worry, all the while coveting the day my utility bill will arrive next month, informing me that I have a $350 electric bill from heating my basement to near braising temperatures - with no one there to appreciate the sauna-esque heat.

I could go on and on, but suffice it to say that my basement has not dipped below 85 degrees for the last 4 days, leaving me with no reprieve from the scourge of the summer sun and no comfortable place to work from home. As a result I have been driven from my home office to work from my firm's Office (which is located 50 miles away), only to come home to my Aunt complaining about how she misses me and wishes I was around more. To which. I can only say. ARGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TLDR - Aunt visited on two days notice and is trying to simulate the fires of hell in OPS basement, during the hottest days of year so far. THe heat drove OP from his home office to his work office. Now aunt is complaining that OP is not around to spend time with her.

90 is odd, even for the elderly. That's 32 Celcius. Some elderly and infirm have even died from temperatures that hot.

I wonder why she can't just set it to 75 (24C) or even 80 (27C).

BTW, I've never had a complaint from an elderly person with the temp at 75, and we've had a lot of elderly visitors. And it's not as if she hails from the tropics either.

disable the thermostat.

problem solved.
Well, not really. Then it might end up being 72 or whatever, which is too cold for some. I think you can buy temp limiting thermostats, but I wouldn't know where you would get that.

In her defense she has diabetes and complains that her neuropathy acts up when she is cold.

What is truly ridiculous is that she is sitting in the 90 degree heat with an electric blanket on.

You don't have a door/window in the basement office to the outside that you can vent out the hot air with a fan?

For what it's worth, yeh it's a giant pain in the ass (and expense) that makes you want to scream, but it is only for a few days and it is something that may never have the opportunity to happen again.

Call an ice delivery service.

2-3 blocks should solve the temp problem. use the melt for sponge bths or water the flowers

It is 90 degrees outside this week. No amount of venting will help. Particularly as my Aunt steadfastly refuses to turn the thermostat down.

Yeah that is basically the only reason I have not let my frustration show.

Disable the thermostat for the visit.

Let her use the electric blanket and thermal longjohns

yeah, I'd be pulling the breaker for the basement heat and telling her that it must have broke, especially if there is an electric blanket available.

Yeah that is an idea. One more day before she heads home.

You'll survive the expense. It'll be a hell of a lot cheaper than flying your family to see her :)

Take your laptop into your bedroom and make it your temporary home office. Relax, breathe deeply, and remember what a blessing it is to have your dad around.

It's your own fault for having electric heat. Nobody who lives that far north should have it.

Who sticks an elderly guest down in the cellar anyways? Master suite should have been vacated temporarily.

Why would you subject your poor auntie to a "putrid" or "horse stable" stinky basement? Do you hate her?

Why didn't you take time off to play with your auntie? Then you could supervise all her actions. I get the sense you really don't like her.

I would have told her the thermostat is not to be touched,... since it's 90 degrees outside.

Then give her a few extra blankets and tell her to go pound salt.

$350 for four days of heat? Damn your natural gas prices must be sky-high.

That is what in-laws apartments are for.

Lesson learned.

Electric heat was the only option when redoing my basement. We never use it (except when relatives visit, apparently). IOW, basement is usually left unheated because its 68 degrees all the time. I heat the rest of my house with pellets.

I do and I am not ashamed of it. Especially when my aunt gave us two days notice and could have stayed in a hotel.

If you read the OP closely, you might understand that my Aunt IS the source of the putrid, horse stable like atmosphere that is currently pervading my basement.

Why didn't you take time off to play with your auntie? Then you could supervise all her actions. I get the sense you really don't like her.

1. I am a lawyer. I work when my clients say I work. If I didn't I would not have any clients.

2. My Aunt gave me 2 days notice of her arrival. Which left me with insufficient time to rearrange my schedule (which includes ~25 client meetings this week)

Electric heat. Basement wants to be the ground temp, which is 68 degrees. Basically requires the electric baseboard to run 24/7 to keep it at 90

Tell her to put on a sweater and if she's still too cold , yell "Put on a damn hat!" in Czech. She'll immediately revert to the docile, village girl she once was in childhood rather than the selfish Millennial-like, entitled immigrant suckling from the wealth of our nation! Also, ask her to bring over a rack of good Pilsner the next time she visits.

Was probably the horrible cooking and being locked in the freezing dungeon. Poor auntie got cold, frightened, and had an upset stomach.

She loves you.
