Grr... Intel Stock Cooler > Thermaltake V1

I swapped coolers out today thinking I would gain a lot with the V1. I cleaned all the residue from the stock cooler off my proccessor, and I wiped the new one off just for giggles. I applied a thin layer of thermal compound and locked the V1 down.

In the current non-oc'd setup, my Idle temps are lower (38 vs 41 originally), but when I run linpack (throuch occt) it makes it about 10 minutes before it reaches 80C and the test exits. What cooler should I be using?

Thanks!

I don't know why you choose that. What do review sites say ? It looks like it doesn't have much more radiator tan the stock one, but looks could be deceiving.

feel the heatsink while you are running occt, does it feel hot? if so then you need to either get a stronger fan/better air flow or get a different cooler with better heat dissipation. if it feels cold/slightly warm, then you need to reseat the cooler/reapply thermal compound.

It was $15 Shipped. I guess I got what I paid for.

I will check it later tonight. It's funny how the Idle temps are great, but it gets way hot under load.

zalman demonstrated almost ten years ago that those fanned out flower sinks just don't cut it. they shouldnt even be spec'd for a 130W i7. I think they were designed for AM2 and then just kept updating their mount kit. either way there are $25 heatsinks that will handily outperform it.

The problem is, they transfer heat better than stock, but their total capacity is quickly over-run when you exceed their capacity to cool.

Get a megahalem. I also saw mention of another cooler that I don't own in another thread that looked cheaper, and looked to have promise. I only recommend ones I know are good though.

the hyper 212, can't handle the heat of an overclocked I7 930.

the V1 it's push pins are really weak, much weaker than even the intel ones. I had one and it sucked until I swapped out the push pins for a backplate.

Coincidentally, the V1 is on there as well and performing quite a bit worse (but nowhere nearly as bad as the stock heatsink).

As you can see the Hyper212+ does very well with a 150 watt thermal load. So, it can definitely handle an OCd 930. The question is, OCd how far? For a 3.8 ghz or so OC on stock volts or less I'd say no sweat. For a 4.4 ghz 1.35 volt OC? Most likely not.

I would agree with that. But my 3.7 OV at 1.30 vcore still nets me temps over 60c at load with a megahalem. With the same setup, a 212 would be well over 80c. Thats my point.

ive never used hyper 212 but it seems like its a generic Sunbeam core contact, and i use those on almost all of the 10 pc's i run. i7 930 will run perfect with it, i even used one with a ultra120 bolt threw kit that i hammered out since heatpipes blocked installation.

You bought an aluminum heatsink to replace your stock i7 cooler??? That makes no sense, go copper.

that is such a horrible exaggeration. with two of the same fans they would be within 8-10 celcius of each other. go buy one.

Update. I made sure the cpu cooler was seated well. Now it runs for an hour an never gets above 59C. Will test more to see if this proves out.
