Grr...I hate it when the things I buy are DOA!

My iBook of ~4 years has been acting up, so today I went to the Apple Store nearby and grabbed a fully-loaded MacBook. Got it home, transferred all my data, got all the settings perfect, and was 100% satisfied. Until I went to install iLife '08, and I realized the DVD drive is DOA. Doesn't show up in System Profiler, nor in Disk Utility. It just doesn't work.

Anyways, now I have to shlep it all the way back to the Apple Store, which is 45 minutes away tomorrow. They better not give me any problems trading it in, and they sure as hell transfer all my data for me! I've heard of some horror stories with customer service at the Apple Stores, so I'm hoping it won't happen to me.

there should be no problem getting a new one, and what is the big deal about transfering your stuff. Put the old laptop in target disk mode and use the import feature when you are setting up a new copy of OSX

Maybe have them replace the dvd drive ?

I would hate anybody messing around with my computer and all my files. One guy who bought a dell and used it for two years became lazy and stopped backing up his files and when he needed Dell to fix a hard drive problem they simply formatted his drive with a restore cd.

Here's a hint, most computer users don't back up their files whatsoever.

I'm just saying I hope they'll do it. I'm assuming they will, considering it'll have to be done in the store either way. I couldn't use the target disk mode for my iBook to this MacBook, since there's some compatibility issues with G4 to Intel for that feature, and it wouldn't connect.

I've still got all the data on my iBook just in case anything happens, but it'll take a lot longer then just doing a transfer from MacBook to MacBook.

When I buy a laptop, the last thing I want to do is have repairs done to it the day after I bought it. It's either a new laptop or I'm returning it and taking my business elsewhere.

Nice troll there. Like "PC" computers and "Mac" computers use different optical drives.

To the op, depending on how long ago you bought it, you can always just return it and buy a new one if they won't outright exchange it.

shouldn't be a problem exchanging, defective hardware is grounds for an exchange.

i'm sure they will make you whole, enjoy your new laptop!
