I've been trying to set up my system as you see it in my sig for a while now, and still I'm having trouble. This is what I've done and whats happened so far (I started with just hard drive and video card in system, and plan to install each component one at a time):

1) I successfully format hard drive
2) Windows 98SE installs successfully, windows loads without any errors (and mighty fast, too!)
3) I install Epox Motherboard drivers - (AMD miniport driver, VIA VxD driver, VIA USB somethin or other driver)
4) Reboot, check system properties - ! for the VIA Secondary IDE controller - both cd drives dont show up in my computer
5) Change VIA IDE controllers to the standard windows controller - problem goes away, drives appear after reboot
6) I install drivers for Radeon LE, this goes without any problems, display works fine.
7) I turn off computer, and install Sound Blaster Live! Value card.
8) Turn on computer, windows detects new component.
9) I point windows to look at cd-rom drives for drivers (Sblive cd is in drive e:, my second drive), windows cant find them
10) I point windows at the specific directories on cd where the drivers are installed
11) Windows finds and accepts the driver for the game port on the sound card, and this driver installs OK
12) Windows says the driver for the actual sblive has "not been specifically written for this device" - i tell to install anyways, windows says "this device has not been installed"
13) i reboot, windows redetects the sound card, same thing happens again

this is the third or fourth time ive reformatted and reinstalled windows. can anyone tell me why the hell this happens? it only started after i put in my new maxtor hard drive and ram (but i dont think ram is involved).

also: i primarily use my computer for gaming, but since i have a cable modem and plan to network with a second computer, would it be worth it to upgrade to win2k? ive heard theres been issues with it running games. if not, how about winxp?

thanks for the help,
pyro

I would do the following procedure on a clean HDD.

[*]partition and format
[*]install 98SE
[*]Install AMD AGP miniport, reboot
[*]Install 4-in-1 4.33 drivers and uncheck ONLY the AGP driver, reboot
[*]Install DX8a, reboot
[*]Install latest Radeon drivers, reboot
[*]Install Liveware 3.0, reboot
[*]Install everything else

Win 2K has very few issue with games that I am aware of, and I personally have NO issues playing my games. I would upgrade to Win 2K and do a clean install.

There is only one AGP selection when you run the 4-in-1 installer that I am aware of. However, deselect any AGP references during the 4-in-1 setup. Get the 4.33's from viatech.com
