Growing herbs in small containers.

I have a box I've built for growing tomatoes. (1x 100w HPS and 1x 100 W MH running 18 hours on and 6 hours off a day)

I've got a little free space that I could use fit some small planters/containers. Probably something like 32oz. - 64oz. cups.

I was thinking of growing some herbs. Perhaps Basil?

Any suggestions on herbs that would grow well and provide usable yield in a small container?

Just about anything really. With that much light they are going to get huge however.

Maybe avoid the hard bushy herbs like rosemary. But in all honesty anything will work.

64oz should be fine, though you'll probably want to replant them periodically as they get potbound. Make sure you poke holes in the bottom of the cups for drainage. Few plants will tolerate sitting in water, and fewer will tolerate the inevitable buildup of salts in the soil.

Thanks, y'all.

What about photo-period issues? Will most herbs be fine on an 18/6 light cycle?

The cops use those IR cameras now, so make sure to cover the windows so you don't get busted with your "tomatoes" and "basil".

I think that the 18/6 cycle is probably overkill and will just run your power bill up unnecessarily, but as far as I know, they should grow fine (maybe a bit more vigorously than normal.)

I haven't looked into it lately. Does HPS supply the plants with the entire spectrum they need, or is this going to supplement window light?

You should be able to grow just about any herb, as long as you provide the proper amount of water for the particular plant. You should also be able to grow peppers like crazy in that setup. :)
