Bought 5 acres in Northern Florida, want a beautiful lust lawn...then realized don't know the first thing about starting a lawn from wild grass...no lawn services in area...from Midwest, where toss seeds and water, got grass that's all. Do I tear up the wild grass and plant, sod or what. When I mow do I pick up the shreds or do I leave them down?

it starts with your climate region, then soil type. Once you know what types of grass you can grow, you can make a decision on your vision. Dont pigeon hole something like kentucky bluegrass if it wont survive your soil ph level.

Florida is notorious for being a difficult place to grow a lush green lawn. Start with a soil analysis, but do it several times throughout ypur acerage :)

Are you sure you want all 5 acres to be lawn? That's a hell of a lot of mowing. As soon as you have that lawn, you'll be a slave to it. Is it going to actually be 5 acres of lawn? Or will an acre be used up by house, driveway, flowerbeds, etc.?

You must not have a Clue on how much $$ 5 acres of SOD costs??

And after you spend the $10,000.00 to $25,000.00 on your SOD you will need a Team of Specialists to Mow, Groom and use Chemicals year round so the Chinch Bugs won't Destroy
your New $25,000.00 Lawn.

Not sure if this is not a Troll Post??

We use Pasture Perfect Grass seed. It grows in about any type of climate and does really great with horses or cattle. It really is fantastic.

I would think that one of the FL universities would have an agriculture dept., like at Florida State or Florida. Perhaps you could peruse the particular school's website for info, or google for that school's extension agent/agency. UGA, for example, has this portal with tons of info on such topics as yours:

Here's another resource: http://www.usna.usda.gov/Gardens/faqs/turfgrassfaq2.html
thank you that was a great education
