It wasn't done for purely cosmetic reasons - it was also sexual in nature. Think about it - bend your fingers down until they touch the bottom of your palm, and you see a hole. :Q

It's pretty sick what women are forced to do to make themselves "acceptable" in the eyes of men. Womeon should not torment themselves for our benifit; that's just sick. (I actually stipulate that my girlfriends must wear comfy shoes on dates.)
Yay for women's lib!
(Yes, I'm a guy. A progressive guy, but a guy nonetheless.)

we've been trying to convey that to the muslim extremists.

make sure you convey it to many westerners also.

ugh...

women here have the choice of what to wear. if they want to wear flat shoes they can. you don't get labeled as an infidel or sinner if you don't wear the right garb. so ur point is meh. not like places like saudi arabia where women can't work or touch any man other then her husband type bs. cuz u know.. if a muslim man see's any more then a womans eyes he just has to rape her.

you're a tool dude...i dont think you understood what was being said.

he was trying to be pc by saying we are all the same... welll.....not exactly..

how did they get around, if they can't stand or walk, I wonder

Poor rich girl, only girls from rich families have to do this.

They are not suppose to get around..., they are suppose to stay home...

Yep, that is why they have such intricate (sp?) designs in their clothing. They couldn't move much, so they sat and sewed and their abilities grew more and more.

As for the neck-rings, they are actually long tubes of brass that are rolled and bent around each woman's neck. The process is takes between 1-2 hours, depending on the length of the 'neck'. The neck isn't really any longer, but rather the collar bones and shoulder bones are reformed and grow in an abnormal fashion, but give the appearance of a longer neck. The group is called the Padaung (pronounced 'pa-dang'). They also wrap a portion below their kneecaps in the same fashion with brass. This process starts when the girls are 5-6 years of age. The whole purpose of the rings is so the marry couldn't marry outside of their group. It was started by males of their group a long time ago. Today, a man of the Padaung group will not marry a woman without the modifications.

I'm taking a course that is pertained to this stuff. (Dress and World Cultures....really bad-ass course and it is really interesting (and easy) to take)
