In which state / metro is this Kroger located? In some areas, Kroger is *very* low end... to the point that I wouldn't even think about shopping there.

But in some areas - such as here in east / south central Ohio, they're very, very nice & clean. Much better than any other grocery I can think of in relative proximity.
This is in Michigan. The "niceness" of Kroger varies around here. The one I went to is quite nice (has a Starbucks) and is filled with yuppies and professionals on the weekend, but there's one across town that's absolutely filthy.

Dateline report on grocery stores. Kroger doesn't do very well:

Wow, Food Lion is the best on that list. I remember Food Lion when I lived in North Carolina. I liked that place.

Food Lion is on top now 'cause 10 or 15 years ago they got busted big time by a show like "Dateline" or "60 Minutes", and the report was so damning that it became national news. Food Lion was hurting so bad they had to close some of their stores. Until I saw a recent report on grocery stores I still associated Food Line with some place I would never, ever, ever, ever shop at... unless I was gonna fix dinner for a cheating SO w/the intent of killing her. 😉

Yeah, the Kroger in Auburn was great when I was there...then again I've seen some Kroger's I would only send my worst enemy into.

Isn't kroger a high-end market? We don't have them down here.
No, it's just a normal supermarket, probably like Albertson's down in FL.

Go to Costco. Supermarket's freshness sucks, Costco has extremely fresh meats/fish/etc, since they come and go so fast.

I bought two one-pound packages of ground sirloin at Kroger yesterday and I froze one of them. I put the other one in the fridge. They had "Sell By" dates of March 5.

Today, I wanted to make some burgers, so I opened the refrigerated package and I was immediately hit with a STRONG "rotten eggs" smell. I just about passed out! :disgust:

Needless to say, I'll be returning to Kroger tomorrow with both packages of beef and my receipt. I'm no longer hungry.
best place to buy meat is from a locally run butcher shop. if you are lucky enough to have one in your area.

That sounds like a good idea.

lol, really? I guess it varies from store to store.

However, the food lion I worked at sucked. I like Lowes Foods, and Harris Teeter.

Yeah I used to live in a small city called Smithfield, probably an hour away from Raleigh. The Food Lion wasn't far at all. My older brother worked there for a while. He liked it. I thought it was a good supermarket. 🙂

LOL I remember Harris Teeter. We used to shop at Piggly Wiggly too.

This is the problem with ground meat... without getting all technical, the basic idea is that you never know exactly what is in your ground meat and, although delicious, it is almost a certainty that it contains harmful levels of bacteria.

Cook any ground meat thoroughly. Even if they managed to grind poop into your meat it won't kill you if you get it hot enough and kill the bacteria. Don't argue with me... I was pre-med before I was pre-law.

I thought the chub packs whould be safer than the fresh packs (styrofoam trays). Of course, the fresh pack meat is cut in-store, so there's not much time for bacteria to grow. Maybe the meat got too warm in delivery.

I remember one time when the guys in the meat room at Kmart didn't clean one of the saws. Ruined all of the pork they cut that day. You could smell the nastiness through the plastic. Probably 40lbs+ of bad meat.
