Or get it DRM free from GoG.com.
And for $1 less as well. Save money AND discourage DRM!

^ This. No point in renting it when you can own it for the same or less money.

As for the game itself, I'd be happy if they kept the soundtrack, etc, the same and merely improved the controls. The inventory system on the original was more than a little clunky. Anyone know if they've improved that?

They were not able to make a true 16x9 mode, so you will play in 4x3. That is interesting to me.

You can use a gamepad or mouse for controls now, I think it's meant to play with a controller though (so you feel like you're Manny Calavera).

Can I import my old save games from 10 years ago? I still haven't finished the game.

I'm guessing they couldn't do 16:9 due to the way the game was designed. It's not like a modern 3D game where you can rescale everything. The backgrounds and environments have a fixed aspect ratio. To make it widescreen, you'd basically have to redraw everything. By that point, you might as well just do a full remake. Which is not what Tim Schafer wanted to do.

It's sort of like when old shows get remastered in HD. Star Trek TOS maintained it's original aspect ratio (updated to 1440x1080), where as Friends got cropped to fit 16:9. As a result, the remastered Friends episodes look weird.

Tim Schafer did not do much in the remake then, it would have been awesome to see 16x9 but maybe not worth his effort. I see the resolution and texture difference and thank him for that, but would have paid for 16x9. THere is a large GF fanbase out there. Hell, large point and click people still wishing for the past.

There is an aspect ratio setting with "16:9" as an option in the "Special Features" menu (rather than options) but as mentioned all it does is stretch 4:3 out.

Not to take things off topic, but Friends was shot on 35mm film and then cropped for 4:3 in its original run. When they remastered the series for HD, they went back to the original 35mm stock. Essentially what you get is extra picture on the left and right sides.

There are some exceptions to this in shots where cameras or other visual problems would be visible in the extra area. But for the vast majority of the HD remaster, Friends is most definitely not cropped.

Same with The Wire's re-release.

In this case it's surely because they didn't want to redo any of the background textures (perhaps out of a little laziness), in lieu of saying it's keeping the game to its heritage. It's not like we could travel and do anything in those side areas, or that would have been introducing new gameplay.

Yeah, I noticed that after I picked up the game. So my original post was incorrect. It just stretches the image though, similar to what HDTVs do with 4:3 content.

Try the GoG.com forums.
If you want you can also ask for a refund if you can't get it to work properly (they will try and work with you to make it work I believe- http://www.gog.com/support/website_help/money_back_guarantee never used it though)
If you bought it on Steam, well, that's your own fault and problem.

If, within 30 days after the purchase of your game, you experience technical problems or game-breaking bugs that prevent you from finishing your game, contact our customer support. They will do their best to help you fix the problem and if, at the end of their attempts to solve the problem your game is still not working, we'll give you back your money.

I think the issue is the remastered version requires a GPU that can run OpenGL v3.3. Not sure if the HD4000 can do that.
