Gizmodo shootout
The Griffin Amplifi is basically a Boombox for an iPod or iPhone. When Apple released their own version called the Hi-fi for $299 a year or two ago, I was initially very excited - a compact, portable boombox made specifically for the iPod. Aside from the high price, it seemed like a great idea until I heard it in person. Verdict? Terrible. I wouldn't pay $50 for it, let alone $300. After that, a variety of 3rd party manufacturers came out with clones, some for the same price, some more expensive, and some cheaper. Luckily Gizmodo did a shootout with about 20 iPod boombox docks and declared the Griffin Amplifi the Winner. In addition to being the best-sounding dock out of all of the ones reviewed, it's also half the price of the iPod Hi-Fi. I have not heard the Amplifi system in person, but I have a ton of Griffin stuff and I've never had a problem or complaint with any of it. I rank Griffin up there with Logitech in terms of quality.
I decided to get one mainly for my kitchen to use with the iPod in my iPhone, but also for toting around the house (like in the workshop) and to take places where I wanted some music, without having to lug along a bunch of speakers, wires, and cables. I'll update this post when mine comes in. So it's not a super hot deal, but is less than half the price of Apple's competing unit and it's $25 off MSRP of the Amplifi itself.
