I just picked up Grid for the 360 and although it's fun, I suck. I'm trying to get the hang of the control, but I'm crashing all of the time. Any advice?

OK, just played again on Basic and finished 1st. I realized that most of my problems relate to being unfamiliar to the tracks and not being able to determine just how sharp the turns are. I wish there were big f'ing neon signs showing how drastic they are. It's hard to look at the bottom left map in the middle of a race. That said, when I realize I need to be going a lot slower, what's the best method?
Jam on regualr brakes
or
Jam regular brake + handbrake
or
Handbrake + gas for drift?
