Greyhound or Flight?

Flight = ~ 1 hour 15 minutes each way, $200.
Greyhound = ~ 10 hours each way, $69.

I hate long bus trips as I feel like it's a waste of a day, but I'm a poor, unemployed college graduate. Should I suck it up on a bus or just splurge and take a flight?

Amtrak. About an hour faster than the bus and infinitely more comfortable.

How much luggage are you carrying with you? Sure, greyhound is fast but they can't really carry all that much. Try this instead.

Fuck, I'd probably have to fly but only because of my long legs. Leg room on a Greyhound is worse then a plane, and spread out over a long period sucks even worse.

Are there any late night bus rides? You could sleep through the night and not "lose a day". I did this once, and it wasn't bad.

If you are flying into JFK airport you need to add the time it takes to get to and from Manhattan, where I am assuming your interview is. Plus the cost.
If you land at LaGuardia the travel time is less and the cost is less.

With a plane you will need to show up to the airport far earlier than the bus depot.
The bus will leave you at 42 street and 8th avenue so depending on where your interview is, you can walk or take the subway. Could be way more convienient and also changes the cost difference significantly.

The flight would be into LGA and I'd be arriving a full day before the career fair.

After searching around, Orbitz has a package deal for 2 nights at a 3-star hotel 2 blocks from Madison Square Garden and flight to/from Pittsburgh for $253. I'm thinking about just doing that, because I couldn't get a hotel for that cheap right where I have to be with any other option.

Only thing is, flights leave at 5:30am from both places... so I'll have to take a cab and get up way early in NYC. Not a big deal.

Still looking though... I might do a bus up, flight back if I can find a hotel that cheap.

use kayak.com you should be able to find flights for <140 bucks if you book well enough in advance.

Actually, there are buses that go to LGA at those times so you won't need a cab.
If you can walk MSG is only about 8 blocks from the Port Authority bus terminal. If you take the bus in or out of LGA, the last time I was there, it leaves you off on the east side at about 1st ave and 34 street. Just about 8 or 9 blocks from MSG (although you could just grab the bus that goes across 34th street every few minutes)

Amtrak seems to be actually more expensive than flying... Any big perks to using Amtrak for a similar day-long trip over flying for a fraction of the length of time?

You can get up and walk around, and if you're there during the right hours the diner is open.

it's $20 roundtrip from philly to nyc

It's the Big East career fair. Yeah it probably doesn't warrant a $200 trip, but I've never been there and I figure it's a good enough time as any... plus I might actually build up a few connections from some reputable companies. With the job market the way it is and me literally being turned away from menial jobs in Pittsburgh due to "over-qualification," it only makes sense to expand my search.
