Grey market?

yeah, that's pretty much it. is it really worth not having a factory warranty or officially supported hardware just to save ~20%?

I'd argue yes 😉

I bought my grey market D80 kit a year ago from an online place here with an excellent reputation, and I've had absolutely no regrets. I saved well over that 20% at the time fwiw.

I got a full official D80 kit package (with English instructions and menus of course), they were as prompt, courteous and helpful as I'd heard tell when I thought I had a problem and sent it back (turns out there was nothing wrong 😱), and it appears that Nikon will perform any fee-related work as per normal now I'm outside the warranty period, assuming I want them to do it rather than a third party...

This sums up my feelings quite well 😉

I'm trying to remember... was it in these forums where someone had the story about their camera that was a grey market camera - they sent it in for repair (for a fee) and Canon (maybe Nikon?) discovered from the serial number that the camera was one of many that had been stolen from the factory the previous year?

Not sure. I bought mine from one of the places listed in that link, and I've been nothing but impressed (and bought more stuff, including gifts for others). They're incredibly quick, knowledgeable and friendly 🙂

my 50 1.8 is grey (BH)
my body and kit lens came from canons company store (Referb) and I have had no problems with either

In some countries, Nikon wouldn't even touch the camera no matter what if it's from the gray market. In that case, not buying gray market products are important.
