PIEDMONT, Ala. - Two people cleaning a vacant house in Piedmont over the weekend found two live hand grenades in a closet, authorities said.

Police Chief David Paslay said family members of the property owners were cleaning the house Sunday when they discovered a fragmentation grenade and a smoke grenade among several boxes.

When authorities arrived, they found the grenades on the porch, intact and in their original packaging _ and, therefore, not likely to detonate, Paslay said.

Aaron and Sara Cunningham are listed as the homeowners, according to Calhoun County Tax records. Both died in 2003.

Two members of the Anniston Army Depot's Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit determined the grenades were World War II-era munitions. The grenades were placed in a metal box and taken to the depot to be destroyed, Paslay said.

When they were cleaning out the house of my ex boss after he died, they found several Korean War era grenades in his house as well, along with several belts of .50 cal ammo....

My dad has a WWII era rifle (can't remember the make and model) in his gun cabinet that his father left for him. I've got a WWII era training bayonet (rounded point instead of a sharp point) that we found from cleaning up my uncle's house after he passed.

I've heard second hand that Germany still has WW2 era stuff still lying all over the place. They allow you to carry it out of the country, but they limit how many pounds of stuff you're allowed to take with you. Of course, the guy who told me was usually given to exagerration and outright lies, but he's been known to (rarely) speak the truth. Can anyone confirm or deny?

IIRC, the Germans don't look favorably on people doing that sort of stuff.

I lean in the direction of "lie".

There are probably thousands of caches of WWII era weapons scattered throughout Europe, I remmeber reading a story last year where a cache of grenades and handguns were found in a tree in France. Now picking the stuff up and taking it with you... well that might be a different story. I don't think many customs angents of any country are going to let you in or out with a live gernade.

The Russians are acutally out digging up old battlefields/bunkers and recovering weapons and explosives to sell on the black market.
