Our backyard is, well, a little rough. My question is, do I let all the dandelion seeds go, or is there something else I should go out there and do. THe only thing I can think of is to go out with a shop vac, but I'm afraid that would challenge my sanity.

there is nothing you can do now.

Just make sure you put down a good pre-emergent in the early spring. By early I mean before you see any dandilions.

That or you could go dig all them buggers up.

What you really need to do is get the lawn thick and healthy so weeds can't grow. And if you haven't put down a pre-emergent do it right away to stop other weeds.

i have personaly dug up about 1000 dandelions and I really can't tell if I have made a difference.... here are some estimates i came up with the other day:

yard has 15,000 ft^2

there are approximately 2 dandelions per ft^2

there are approximately 30,000 dandelion plants.

I have eradicated a whopping 3% of the dandelions in my yard.

I am a dumbass!

the trick is to prevent them from sprouting in the first place.

Wait a week and they'll all be gone.
Then use a "weed and feed" product to kill the dandelion plants. You'll probably have to seed the yard in after they're all dead.

let them grow and grow until you have formed a whole backward pillow-top lawn, and then do a belly flop off of your roof

gather them all up and instead of making 30,000 1-dandelion wishes, make 1 30,000-dandelion wish. that many dandelions you could probably get a good wish off, like world piece or a new car for me. you are going to have to take a really big breath though

My dad has actually done this. Set the whole thing on fire and started from scratch a few weeks later :)

That's not an uncommon-weed control tactic out in the country. They'll do controlled burns of ditch banks because you can't mow them.

Seconding the suggestion for Weed and Feed next spring, it's too late now probably. I put 25lbs on my parents yard a month or so ago and the dandelions were very scarce last weekend when I went home to visit them. There's areas of their yard that look like your photo does and this year there were maybe 4 dandelions there.

Go out there witha plastic bag and some scissors. Snip snip snip all the flowers and seeds off, repeat until end of year. Then when winter rolls around, put in the weed killing things.

Sorry to say but it is about the worst case of dandelion. There isn't much you can do at this point except for herbicide (such as 2,4-D) it, then put a 2 inch fresh layer of top soil on it to reseed/sod or run a rototiller over it for reseed/sod.

Use a high nitrogen fertilizer to increase the grass growth and keep grass at 2.5 inch to help it choke out the weeds. And remember to water.
