maybe its just me, but I don't give two shits about "the environment" except how it can help man. I would kill every little fluffy bunny and pour oil on every stupid bird if it meant saving one human life.

I dunno, I know some people "find God" looking at a beautiful peaceful lake, or a baby deer playing in the trees or something. but for me what gets me off is driving by an oil refinery, or a nuclear plant, or any sort of construction site and seeing how MAN can dominate the landscape. I mean screw God, hes got superpowers so whats so impressive about what hes created, what really impresses me is when thousands of PEOPLE can accomplish something that can transforms this planet in a good way.

For example, some people get off on pictures like this: click

And the company BrownTown works for builds those sorts of thigns which is pretty cool :p.

I like environmentally-friendly things. Specifically, I like green that works; as in it doesn't require subsidies and is viable on its own.

An example would be nuclear power. I've been reading up a bunch on them lately. To reduce the waste coming out of those reactors requires some pretty amazing technologies. Or something on the small scale like a ground source heat pump for home heating.

To me, the things that go into those plants you posted pictures of that make their impact less is far more interesting than the structure itself.

So, why not try to get the stuff you like in a more sustainable way that helps protect places like Peyto Lake for the people who enjoy that? Win/win for everybody, provided it doesn't cost an excessive amount more to do that.

Theres the rub right there. I am willing to spend extra for stuff like scrubbers on coal plants which help stop asthma and other lung diseases. But this "global warming" stuff will cost 10 times as much as scrubbers and it takes about 3 HUGE leaps of faith before you can even think it will save a single human life (meanwhile you KNOW those billions could save lives if put to good use in other ways like finding cures for diseases).

The way I see it you could spend a trillion dollars to make the earth be 1 degree cooler and make sea levels a foot less (although with the rate China is going you are really only delaying it a decade or so). Or you could spend that same money to provide something useful like developing curses to diseases, or providing better education to the poor etc.

There is a good graph somewhere that shows the monetary expenditures of different programs in order to save a single life. Providing food to people in Africa can save a life for only a few thousand dollars, providing health care to the poor can do it for ten thousand, etc... Then they go into some of the EPA programs and we are talking tens or hundreds of millions per life saved. Some EPA programs spend over a BILLION dollars to save a single life. The way I see it combating global warming is that sort of program, sure you *MIGHT* save some lives, but you can save 100 times as many using that money more wisely.

Thank you for posting a link to the article. Michigan's "genius" governor Jennifer Granholm ("and in five years you'll be blown (er, moving) away") is all in favor of alternative energy and of forcing it on Michiganders. (The word "nuclear" is not a part of her vocabulary.)

Oddly enough, Arizona just landed a solar panel manufacturing facility to be built/operated by a Spanish company.

Yucca mountain was a stupid idea anyway. The real solution is reprocessing the waste so it can be used to generate more power, like the French do.

Nah, I'd rather close all industry here in the U.S. and send those union jobs to China so that we won't pollute the environment with CO2. That'll also lower demand for energy here in the U.S.

Sounds good to me....POVERTY FTW!!!!

Funny, Germany is focusing on green industry and energy and their economy is doing great compared to many other countries.

Compared to what, Zimbabwe? Germany's economy is tumbling, only surpassed by Japan among the world's major economies. It's shrinking by about 6% this year.
