When I use WMP, I get big green blocks on alot of my videos. Then I try the same video with PowerDVD. I really like using WMP, I find it easier to use. How/Is there a way to tell what codec the video's I am playing needs? I tried downloading xvid/divx but those would not work. Thanks!

(These are mpegs)

WMP should play mpeg with no problem. Maybe the person did a ****** job of encoding. I know I get weird green stuff and messy video after fast forwarding and skipping around, but that will clear up in a second or two.

Try using media player classic http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Media_Player_Classic.htm and see if that helps you out any.
I wouldn't recommend VLC for mpeg (I think MPC does a better job) but you could try it out in that as well. http://videolan.org

good luck

I would recommend MPC too for EZ control over which codecs are utilizied for what. WMP doesn't even show which are in use does it, let alone allow choosing? So then fiddling with priority becomes necessary or else uninstalling any codecs with overlapping abilities. "mpegs" is a tad vague. 1, 2, 4? xvid/divx are lower sub-versions of 4. MPC has an alternative 1 decoder (to that included with Windows) and a 2 decoder. For generic 4, ffdshow's libavcodec works well.

Google for an application called "Gspot." It will analyze the file and tell what codec you need.

Me too. Gspot shows installed codecs and render results and schtuff but I prefer MI for file properties.

I just install CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack) so that basically covers everything so I don't have to worry about codecs.

The only third party ones I normally install are Xvid and DivX Pro to encode junk.
