Greatly Extending Range of Wireless Network

Would it be practical to somehow extend the range of a wireless network to a distance of around...5 miles? I have heard of people doing just that am and wondering what kind of equipment would be necessary. Anyone know?
 
I know that there is an antenna on the market that now does a 9 mile range, but I forget who makes it.
