Now that duke nukem forever has been released, what do you think is the greatest vaporware of all time?

My current guess is black mesa source.

Half-Life 2 was released in 2004, black mesa started its project in either December 2004 or January 2005. That means BM has been in development for 7 years.

DNF probably holds the record for the longest vaporware.

Team fortress 2 was in development for something like 7 or 8 years? So BM is going to be tied with tf2 pretty soon.

Dungeon Keeper 3 was supposedly in the making when (what is EA that bought Bullfrog then ripped it apart in support for black and white?)

I remember when STALKER was said to be vaporware and its release was pushed back constantly.

Once it was released though it turned out to be pretty damn good (depending who you ask) and had a fairly strong following.

Duke Nukem Forever was actually released though, so it doesn't really count as vaporware, am I correct?

And I agree about Black Mesa Source. However, it's a free mod that is being worked on for free and then will be downloadable for free, so it's not quite in the same league as an actual big-budget game. It's free, so it's not like the developers really owe anyone anything.

DNF has it in longevity, but there is a special place for Battlecruiser (first 2000, then 3000). Feverently overhyped, dozens of full page gaming mag ads until it was finally forced out years after it was promised-and forced out as a bug ridden barely alpha software.

Baldur's Gate III: The Black Hound.

Of course, unless Atari gives BioWare the okay to make it, it will never be done.

Vaporware for PC is that new ubi game I am alive. It's such vaporware on PC that no one even knew it existed, and they announced PC will not be getting it now....

Diablo 3.

Blizzard is just trolling, they're going to keep putting it off until WoW goes under and they go out of business.

Wasn't Prey supposed to come out in the 90's?

The real Fallout 3 had a ton of us excited before it vaporized.

I have to say Half-Life 2: Episode Three, since we don't even know if it's in development as of now, and dare I say that by now we should have completed it years ago. Although, an actual vaporware game (or any software) needs a firm release date first, or at least needs to be announced (without necessarily having a release date to start with), and the pushing back of that date to a later one, and constantly done so for years make that game vaporware. Usually until it's canceled, "replaced", "renamed", rebooted, or extremely rarely released... Duke Nukem Forever is one such very rare example of a vaporware making it to the stores.

In Episode Three's case, it was announced as being the last episode of a trilogy of episode within the Half-Life 2's story arc... but there was no actual release date ever given (that's common from Valve however). Additionally, it does seem like it's been ages since we've played (and most of us have completed) Episode Two, but technically it's "only" been just a bit more than four years by now (4 years and 3 months more precisely as of now), since it was released in October 2007. So, technically, Episode Three may well have been announced about four years ago, but that's relatively recent compared to other known vaporware games.

I do consider Episode Three the greatest vaporware in my book nonetheless, merely because it belongs to a video game saga contender in video gaming history. It belongs to the story of Half-Life, therefore it belongs to video gaming as a whole. We've receive zero news concerning its development or status since the past four years (since it was announced), making it a vaporware for me.

I think there was a Stargate shooter being made and then it died because MGM killed it by refusing to find a publisher so that they could use then use the license to create an MMO...

not sure what ever happened with that.

So it's either that or Starcraft: Ghost

...and then will be downloadable...

That's debatable.

Agreed on Episode 3 though. Episode 2 ended without much closure, if I remember correctly (it's been so long since I played it I really don't remember the story). And actually, Episode 3 was officially announced and given an unofficial release date of the end of the year, 2007:

http://www.gamespot.com/news/half-life-2-episode-one-gold-two-dated-three-announced-6151796

Just because it wasn't given a hard and fast release date doesn't mean it's not vaporware. Valve hasn't really said anything at all about Ep. 3 other than that it will exist, and I think now expectations have been built up so much they're afraid to release anything because it won't be able to meet them. Or they're just too busy selling virtual hats for real money.

But who knows. A lot of games make it through development hell and actually get released. Alan Wake, Prey, any Gran Turismo game, any game by Valve or Blizzard...
