I think the original Deus Ex has demonstrated the best combined design of any game released to date. Everything in that game was done correctly, aside from a couple of out of place sounds and a few quirky animations. The story, the weapons, the gameplay, the variety, the level design, the atmosphere, was all slam-on. However, that is not to say I think it is the best game for pure fun. I simply think it is the best made game to date.

Yep, Deus Ex my vote for best Game Ever!

Oh my god, "Full Speed To Killimaar" still gives me chills to this day.

Edit: Games I've played the most:
Team Fortress Classic - you CS people don't know anything about the HL engine unless you've played this seriously. I should record a demo just so everyone can truly see "exploiting the engine".
Unreal Tournament 2004, 2003, Classic - the best FPS. Period.
Descent Series - No love for this series?
Worms Armageddon - a natural LAN strategy game.

Best single game, I'm going to have to give to X-Com UFO defense - the only turn based strategy that was the bomb-diggity-omb.

There is no "best game of all time", games are a comsumable, like movies, or a good meal. They are enjoyed while being consumed. The best PC game ever depends on your apetite at the time you want to play a game, at that moment it could range from the valume competative Sim City, to a twich spree in Unreal Tournament.

Total Annihilation, Quake 2, Quake 3, Halo 1. (At the rate I'm going, Halo 2 will be on this list in another few months)

Diablo II, nothing like hours of sitting there pressing ctrl + v in the USEast trading channel.

age of empire 2 with the conquers expansion pack...that expansion pack is also probably one of the best expansions to ever exist

Way way too many to choose one greatest...some of my all-time favorites though (in no particular order):

Duke Nukem 3D (the amount of interactivity...the multiplayer...)
Unreal (awesome atmosphere, just very very impressive especially for the time period in which it was released - and the music was just perfect)
Unreal Tournament (to me, the definitive multiplayer FPS)
Quake2 was quite good as well....sooo many hours of my early teen years spent on Quake2 CTF :D

I'm going to have to say FarCry as well (at least for an honorable mention)...I'm only about 75% through the game (yes, even though I've had it since last March...I play "on and off", you can say :p), but I was so impressed. The graphics were unlike anything I'd ever seen, quite good AI, vehicles, level design....

I've actually never played Half-Life, and I've barely started HL2, so I can't yet comment on either of those.

Can you tell I'm an FPS whore? :)

Alpha Centauri. Nothing like loading up a carrier/sub full of planetbusters and reducing your neighbors empire to ocean trenches.
