Greatest Olympics?

I'm young so I haven't seen many Olympics. I really like Kerri Strug's stick but I don't remember much else from that one. I think the greatest will be the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. I just heard that they have spent $32 Billion on it already :Q

And just think, that 32 billion could have been spent on useless crap like food for their starving children. Well, I say good job China, I salute you!

Uh, what would the greatest Olympics ever have to do with the spending by the host country. How does spending 32 billion make for great competition and story lines???

by your thinking, no country that has poor people should host the olympics. in that case, there will be no more olympics.

I dont know about great competition or story lines, but a FANTASTIC stadium / facilities sure adds a lot to the games in general. You gotta think the opening/closing cermonies will be great.

As for competition, I think it will be great. The rest of the world is catching up to the US as is evident by this year's games, a parity in skill level = much better chances for great competition.

China will gain a lot more financially speaking than going out.
By hosting the Olympics, it stimulates the economy in many many ways, from ticket sales, broacasting rights, hotels, tourism, plane tickets, etc.
Those are just the direct benefits, I think the real season that China spent so much money is that they want to showcase to the world that they are a world power to be reckoned with, in sports, and in economics. This also attracts foreign investors, to a billon people market. Remember the China is really communist in name only these days, they have embraced captalism for more than 20 years. After the WTO memembership and Olympics, one can predict another surge in economic growth.

"Oh, well I didn't wanna be in it anyway..."
"Welcome to the club brother!"

I think this year has got to be the best Olympics so far. So many scandals, and upsetting defeats, especially with the USA basketball team. OMG america invented basketball how could they lose? Plus you gotta love the men's gymnastic scandal with the whole korean guy not getting gold. 🙂

A lot of people around here where bitching with the same argument for the 2010 bid on the olympics: "Why don't we use that money to fix our homeless problem, and better education and healthcare?"

Cause it's not like we had a few billlion kicking around to throw something at. It's an investment. China has gone out and borrowed $32 billion and is hoping for a return on that investment come olympics time.

well, I know one thing for sure. You won't see half-empty stadiums in Beijing like you did in Athens. China have a lot more people and they are a lot more enthusiastic towards the Olympics than the Greeks.

This is true.

How true. Everybody says the money is better off being spent on social programs and more altruistic programs.

People have to realize that in Canada a large portion of the funding of the 2010 Olympics comes from the Federal Government. Do you really think that money if not spent on the Olympics would come to our province (B.C.) ?? Of course not.

The Olympics will have a positive impact on B.C. long after they are finished. I for one am looking forword to them 😀

how so? plenty of tickets were sold. "Television ratings are 15% up from the 2000 Games in Sydney, while ticket sales have topped figures from the Seoul and Barcelona Olympics." maybe not as many as australia and atlanta, but more than others.
Source

it also didn't help having newspapers telling americans to avoid greece during the olympics because of terrorist attacks (*cough* atlanta 1996).

Actually, Canada invented basketball...that's why they're such a basketball powerhouse 😀

But yeah, that gymnastics thing was pretty entertaining. The american guy that won the gold had already split, and then the USOC stepped in and told IOC to screw off. But it seemed like a lot of countries were protesting results and trying to get double medals and everything. I guess after the figure skating scandal at the last olympics, it opened up a can of worms.

100 years of debt for athens. it was amusing at times. but really i only watched on and off.. 15 minutes here and there... mostly didn't care.

Those poor Greeks are going to be paying for those games for many many years to come. Their taxes will go up I imagine.

I agree, i have watched them every night on tv after work. It became kind of a routine flipping between
the three channels that they were being broadcast on, I'll miss them not being on.

During the closing ceremony tonight one of the announcers mentioned that Greece spent around $1 billion on security alone, and cost would be a major hindrance to any smaller nation hoping to host the games.

As far as ticket sales go, I was really surprised at how totally deserted most of the events were. The only thing that looked almost sold out was track & field. There couldn't have been more than 2 dozen people at the softball games, even the soccer games looked empty save for the gold medal match. Here in Salt Lake City during the '02 games you could count the events that didn't sell out on one hand.
