I've come to realize what was the greatest invention in history.

Where do you place the concept of zero in particular, and math in general? Is it an invention or an inevitable discovery?

For a physical invention, I'd probably go with Otto for the 4-stroke engine or Bessemer for the Bessemer Process.

That is what I was coming to post. Gutenberg brought information to the masses and changed the course of human history. Easy to argue it brought on the end of the middle ages.

Sadly enough maybe so, at least as far a literary inventions are concerned.

A character that was supposed to be an example of an over commercialized and cut throat 1980's Wall Street culture today now shows us how dehumanized and fetishized modern society has become. A book that back in 1991 was very controversial wouldn't be that today, which shows how much our society has decayed.

I can't think of an American literary character that hits home in 2016 like Bateman does.
