smp: no, i listen to a lot of non-radio stuff... yellowcard and phantom planet are a couple of my favorite bands right now.

metallica was a little bit before my time though, so i don't think i've had the full experience of following them

pulse: KROQ has been getting on my nerves for a long while, they play the same stuff over and over again, i hear smells like teen spirit at least daily, same with every popular sublime song. 94.3 is a good socal station, (actually more Orange County), but iono, sometimes some local bands that they promote just suck.

Maybe Jimi Hendrix or Pink Floyd.

Putting out albums now, um.....

I wouldn't consider any band (that I know of) making albums now great. Dream Theater is close, in my opinion.

I don't like any of your top 3. ;)

I agree with whoever said Pavement and Yo La Tango, and the other guy who said Hey Mercedes.

Modest Mouse -- Cowboy Dan
Built to Spill -- Big Dipper
A Silver Mt Zion -- the whole thing is a song

Sonic Youth -- The Wonder
Shiner -- Surgery
Gunfighter -- Captain Acid
Dorkweed -- You're So Trailer Park
Owls -- Everyone is my Friend
Hey Mercedes -- Bells
CKY -- Disengage the Simulator
Death Cab For Cutie -- Blacking Out the Friction
Trail of the Dead -- Another Morning Stoner
Houston -- Ugly Tree
Jackie O Mutherfvcker -- Beautiful September (We are going there)
My Vitriol -- Ode to the Red Queen

Stroke -- Godlike
Boards of Canada -- Dawn Chorus
Labradford -- any
Do Make Say Think -- Dr Hooch
Fly Pan Am -- track 5
Over the Rhine -- The World Can Wait
My Bloody Valentine -- Loomer

Ugly Cassanova -- Things I Don't Remember
Autolux -- Future Perfect
The Melismatics -- Speaking in Tongues

I am willing to bet Tool will be on the radio in 25 years. Hell most radio stations took 6 years to start playing their older albums.

Incubus will not be on the radio in 10 years much less 25. Neither will the RHCP. I do think that Radiohead will be though.

How if the world do you think Green Day experimented? They just came from Punk grassroots and left those in the dust many years go. Punk got them the music deal and they left punk behind. They are far from experimental IMO.

Most radio stations barely play Tool or Radiohead now, what makes you think they are ever going to play them in the future?

As for Incubus and RHCP, I think that some of the hits they've had will continue to get airplay on radio stations, but who knows what kind of new music they'll have in 10 years. Hell, KROQ plays Under The Bridge at least 3 times a day and that song is about 10 years old. I think Incubus is going to be around a very long time, though. They are one of the most innovative sounding to hit big in the last few years.

And for greatest in present time, for my tastes I'd have to go with Dave Matthews Band. (Regardless of what the old fart in the first post thinks. :)) Of course because I've stated that I like them this thread will immediately turn into 3 or 4 guys coming in here saying how much they suck. So I apologize for those jackasses in advance. :)

I can't speak for all regions in the US but in SC and Raleigh, NC.......Tool gets played a good amount. As more times has passed the more Tool gets played. Tool are true musicians unlike all the rap-metal crap out today that will pass with the fad. Pink Floyd and Led Zepplin were true musicians that made good music. That is why their music has last so long.

On to metellica. Every album from Black to Present has sucked a$$. Black was/is a horrible album for metallica. Enter Sandman was a terrible song. Metallica will be around for a LONG time because of the classics they produced on Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and Kill'Em All

This is an impossible question...

I like everything on my list

There are hundreds if not thousands more that I like that I don't have... don't make me choose a favorite/best band :)

wasn't this a thread about greatest current band, not band that gets most airplay and will continue to do so?

Stone Temple Pilots, System of a Down, Tool, and Galactic (for variety)

Hmm...U2 and R.E.M. are still putting out music, although IMO it doesn't compare to their material from the 80's/early 90's. I would go with major British bands - Radiohead, Oasis, and Blur (considering Damon Albarn's work on Gorillaz). I also like the Strokes but I'll wait until their second album to decide.

System of a Down
Incubus
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Nine Inch Nails
Type O Negative
Stabbing Westward
Fiona Apple
Everclear
Sublime
Mudvayne

All I can think of at the moment:)

As for who will still be on the radio in 20 years;

Red Hot Chili Peppers
Nine Inch Nails
Maybe Incubus

I'm listening to Highway To Hell right now from one of favorites - AC/DC . Love most of Ozzy's stuff . I've been listening to a lot of Slayer lately.

I am guessing he turns off his radio and actively persues music versus passively absorbing music from popular media :)

Dparker already listed most of my favorite groups (Modest Mouse is at the top), and most of that won't be on the radio 10 years from now, it's not even on the radio now. :D Dear Ephesus rocks too.

To me its Oasis. I know that they run their mouth quite often...and people bash them on this board...etc.

I recently saw them live .....and I'm thorougly convinced that they're one of the greatest current bands.....I don't think anyone can agree to just one...but I believe Oasis is up in the top 5 at the least. Their cover of The Who's My Generation is incredible.......
