Without thinking too hard...

#1 - James Jamerson
Tie - #2 - Les Claypool / Jaco Pastorius
#4 - Geddy Lee
#5 - Bootsy Collins

I just know I'm forgetting about somebody that should be in the top 5...

Why isn't Tom Morello on your list??

IMO, it would be Les Claypool at number 1 and Tom at number two

i think Flea from RHCP is pretty damn good.

Yes very good call, Michael Balzary. My list would look something like this

1 - Les Claypool (Primus, Various Others)
2 - Tom Morello (RATM, Audioslave)
3 - John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin)
4 - Michael Balzary (RHCP [better known as Flea])
5 - Bootsy Collins (Parliament-Funkadelic)

Your list is a lot different then mine

Tom Morello (RATM, Audioslave) is the guitarist... he doesn't play bass. Tim Commerford is who you're looking for.

Oops. Your right, my bad

I guess I barely pay attention to the bass part unless it's being specifically emphasized in the song. So nobody really comes to mind. Most rock groups are pretty unimaginative with their bass playing, unlike, say, funk groups.

He doesn't play fast but he can play anything and his tone is nice and bassy, deep, and warm (not all trebly and poppy sounding, afterall it's BASS) plus his style is amazing.

Paul that is.
