GREAT winter boots?

My mom is terrified of the winter... Watching her walk down a somewhat snowy road is actually pretty comical - she's like a newborn duck who hasn't quite figured out how to waddle yet.. Anyway, I think that I'll pick up some boots for her- any suggestions? I'm totally clueless about manufacturers so a good brand name would be good.. I'm looking for something light but really grippy - something that you can basically walk on a layer of ice with.. I know they exist but I'm not sure what to get...

Thanks!

Hmm good subject. While you are at it, is therew any type of shoes that are good for jogging in icey conditions? This CA Boy is slipping all over the place here in frigid Boston when I go out for my daily run. I've already pulled a calf muscle because of it!

Doesn't your cane help at all? :D

What kind of boot are you looking for, a snow boot to walk out to the mail box and back, or something more rugged that you can walk quite a distance in?

I have a pair of Asolo boots that I generally only wear hiking in the summer, but they make a great pair of snow/rain boots when neccessary. Solomon also makes some great boots, but they won't be your typical pair of snow boots. Both of these brands will generally give your great traction and stability, even in slippery conditions.

What kind of boots does she want? For full-sized winter boots, Sorel makes some really nice ones.

For smaller hiking boot sized boots, Columbia is great. Columbia @ REI

I'm looking for something that she could wear to work.. That doesn't mean that it has to be fashionable (she could change into something else at work) but it should be good for walking a few blocks to the train station/etc.. She's terrified of the snow though so she needs something that'll really grib onto stuff.. I'll look into solomon - thanks!

I don't think they're made anymore, but if you can find a pair of Rocky Tac-Team boots, they're awesome for it. They're made of light-weight cordura and gortex, and Thinsulate, very comfy, 9" high, aggressive cleat-style treading and as light as a lot of running shoes.
